Patrick Valenzuela notes the availability of the new Apple Portable Power Adapters: "The new Apple Portable Power Adapters are available from the Apple online store, and Apple has also made older-model adapters compatible with older iBooks and PowerBook G3s available (they are the same old Yo-Yo's but with a white Apple on the top). The price on the new adapter is $80, and the other is $70." Both are expected to ship in about 7 days. iPod power adapters are $50 and are listed with a ship time of 3-4 weeks. (We also recently noted an Apple PowerBook G3 AC Adapter Exchange Program for certain PowerBook G3 systems.)

    $80 My a**

Why does Apple insist on charging 2 - 4 times over over a fair price for accessories to its products? To have the audacity to charge $80 for a simple power adapter and $100 for 128 Megs of memory is just laughable.

So get it somewhere else. It's called the Free Market, in case you just moved to the USA. It means that, if you don't like someone's product, you can buy someone else's. There are other companies making at least the older adapters, and I doubt it will be too long before someone sells their own version of the newer ones (if there aren't already third-party products).

    iPod Adapter the same?

Does anyone know if the iPod adapter is the same as this one? If so, can I use it to charge my iBook via Firewire cable that came with the iPod?

    Re: iPod Adapter the same

The adapters are different. You cannot charge an iBook or PowerBook via FireWire. However, you can plug in your iBook/PowerBook via its AC adapter and then connect the iPod to the iBook/PowerBook via FireWire, and charge it that way. You only need the iPod adapter if you don't have a Mac with FireWire to charge it from.

Anyway, the Madsonline AC adapters are smaller than the Apple one, and have a cool right-angle connector. See: http://www.madsonline.com/

And for the guy who was whining about the price, building an adapter that puts out this kind of high voltage, without overheating or catching fire, is not cheap. Apple and Dell both had problems with power adapters in the past, and had to recall them. I'm sticking with my Apple YoYo for my PBG4 until I hear if there are any problems with the new square adapters or with the Madsonline adapters.

    Apple YoYo Adapters

I'm on my fourth (yes, fourth!) adapter in as many years. Basically, there all c***, especially since one costs anywhere from $50-$80. After this laptop bites the dust, I won't be buying another Apple product!
