Extensis today released Suitcase 10.1, an OS X-compatible version of its application for previewing and managing fonts. The upgrade offers the ability to view fonts in all OS X font directories, and to activate or de-activate fonts in Cocoa, Carbon and Classic applications. Version 10.1 now supports Windows fonts (Open Type and TrueType) for OS X applications and also includes an updated MenuFonts component for Mac OS 9. Upgrades to the $100 package are $50 for registered owners of older versions. French, German and Japanese language versions will be available in January 2002. It is a free update for Suitcase 10 owners.

    Suitcase never worked

properly in classic, all the way up till the end. Way too buggy for professional use. I'll stick with Font Reserve.

    Font Reserve isn't out

Only the server version is Carbon. That's useless for me.

    Buggier than FontReserve?

Suitcase may not have worked "properly in classic", but I know several graphics shops (professional... really) that swear by it.

Whereas I've been using Font Reserve, and half the time sweart *at* it.

For example, just last night I wanted to export about 200 fonts from my Font Reserve database so I could import them into an OS X font directory. After grinding for about 2 minutes, I got a "disk full" error message. My disk had about 2Gb free, several orders of magnitude more space than should have been required. This left me with the task of traversing their byzantine font folder structure from the desktop to extract the fonts... which is a laborious task to say the least. And precisely the kind of operation I have a font management utility for!

I'll spend $60 for a competitive upgrade and try my luck with Suitcase. Besides, now it works with X. Who knows when Font Reserve will?

    except...

their servers seem to be so hard hit, that it's impossible to get at the software.

logical i guess, since it's the only osx option, after adobe dropped atm and font reserve for x is mia.

Use an FTP client, not a browser, and keep trying to get in until you can...

    Never worked?

I used to swear by ATM Deluxe, but at work here we use Suitcase 10. It works fine. Perfectly. I've never had a problem with it at all. I use it at home now too, and I'm looking forward to using it on OS X!

    re: Never Worked?

Next time you lock up hit command-option-esc and you'll see that Suitcase was probably the culprit.

    Awesome!

I've been working in service bureaus for many years...Suitcase is used in about half the places I've worked at while the other half of the places are split between ATMD and MasterJuggler. Personally, I love ATMD, but after getting shafted by Adobe (announcement was made two days after I actually paid for ATMD that it would not be developed for OSX), I've decided to go with Suitcase 10. I downloaded and installed it...I gotta tell you, with Suitcase and Now Contact & Up To Date being released for X within a day of each other, I'm in heaven! GO EXTENSIS!

    Awesome! (addendum)

Oops...found one major bug...can't set properties of a set to be startup set (where the set always loads). Looks like it's a pref, but that's not an appropirate option. Give us a way to set different properties to each set (contextual menus?).

    Other than that, good job!
