Orange Micro today announced a new Combo CardBus PC Card for laptops, which offers two USB 2.0 ports and one FireWire port in a Type II PC Card. The Combo card is bundled with a power supply to provide 500 milliamps of power per port for USB peripherals requiring power. The $140 card is expected to ship in January 2002. (Mac OS drivers not specified, but the company had previously announced it was developing USB 2.0 drivers for the Mac.)

I don't want to knock the company but Orange has rushed products to market in the past only to leave buyers with compatibility problems. Wait to see user reports that they actually work in the real world.

My USB / Firewire card was such a product. I've never been able to use my video camera or CD burner reliably with the Orange Firewire port. Similar products that came out later than mine work more reliably, I'm told.

Of course Apple doesn't help when they pull a Microsoft and make sure that third party products can't compete with Apple's built-in ports & drives when using Apple software.
