Norton debuts iAntivirus on Mac App Store

Symantec-owned Norton has released a new security app at the Mac App Store, iAntivirus. The software is intended as basic malware protection, and can block potential hazards, scan drives for suspected infections, and check a Facebook feed for malicious links. As a quicker way of scanning files, a person can just drag and drop items into the app.

The main screen uses a carousel interface, where two-fingered swipe gestures can be used to navigate between options. Both Mac and Windows infections can be scrubbed, and Norton is promising regular updates through the Mac App Store to deal with new threats. The app is a free download.

    IAntivirus?

I thought there was already a free product called by this name from PCTools, and that when Lion was released the active scan feature ceased to work?

This appears to be the same product, but under the Norton banner now????

    Not surprising

PCTools officially "retired" iAntivirus earlier this month and stopped updating virus definitions.

    Norton AV

I would also be very leary of using anything Norton. Their software tends to be very processor intensive and a memory hog when using the auto protect functions in past interations for antivirus programs, plus for many it tended to cause crashes. If you are going to use any antivirus can always use one of the free ones or would suggest possibly Eset's antivirus program. it tends to be the least computer intensive program out there even on a PC with Windows. I got a free copy at MacWorld a couple years ago and it has yet to find anything that i am aware of even in autoprotect mode. Doesn't seem to affect my other programs
