4D, Inc has announced a special $300 pricing on WebSTAR V for all OS X Server 1.x and OS X Server 10.x users. The license special includes updates and support for one year, with additional support and updates provided for a membership rate of $179 per year. The company says that unrenewed licenses will not expire, however they also will not accept important updates, including a forthcoming update, which it says is already under development, and will "include performance tuning, additional language localization and much more."

    errr...why?

It totally stumps me why someone would pay $300 upfront and $179+ a year when the best web server out there is already built into X: Apache.

    Total cost: $0

Heh...and this is supposed to be a 'special' price on WebSTAR. No thanks 4D, you can keep it.

    How about

How about performance, features, and total cost of ownership?

    Errr...again

Performance: Apache (rated as one of the highest - don't even try to say that WebSTAR can compete with apache.)
Features: Apache - if there's something you're looking for and apache doesn't have it, then you're not looking hard enough.
TCO: Apache again. Apache cost $0. Apache support cost: $0. WebSTAR $179/yr "on special"

Please. For OS9 as a lightweight server, maybe, but I thought one of the good things about having a UNIX based system was to take advantage of the better software that was previously unavailable to us. WebSTAR for OSX is about the most useless thing I've ever heard of. (unless, of course, they give it away)
