Bill House notes that iDVD2 was posted on the Apple Store today. The OS X-compatible version supports full-motion menus and buttons, background MPEG encoding, the ability to add soundtracks to slide shows, up to 90 minutes of video on a disc, and "stunning" new themes.

"I've been waiting for it since I understood that it would solve the issue of iDVD not working with external DVD burners. I have the Pioneer AO3 in a firewire enclosure that I plan on using between my G4 desktop and my Tibook. I contacted Apple (800-MY-APPLE) and was told "we have no idea if it works or not, but we're being overwhelmed by calls asking this question". Any chance of you guys posting an article to help those of us who want to find a solution?

    external burners

The stated requirements imply that external burners will not be supported. This is a pity as I want to swap my internal superdrive with the drive from an external Lacie firewire CDRW (I find the superdrive a bit slow as a general use optical drive).

    oh well

until I can afford DVD Studio Pro, I will just install a superdrive into my main tower, and buy an external case for the old DVD drive (this way I have a place to put the super drive when I can, and I get a place to copy CDs from!) But, please, Apple, give us external support!!

    I'll find out

I have a Dual G4 being built for me at Apple at this moment. I wonder what version/s it will come with? As far as the demos go on the iDVD2 site, it looks fantastic.

    Just got it for free

and it rocks. Apple's software is so far superior to M$ products that it hurts, yet the mainstream press ignores it. If only more people knew how much better macs were, they would pay the extra money for them.

    For free?

    Did you pirate it?
was the $20 too high, or did you just decide that apple didn't deserve the money?

Come on people, anyone who can afford $6-10 for media can afford this modest fee. We need to spend money these days people to encourage people to continue work on software! and we need to keep this money in the economy.

And we also need to not break the law...let's not forget about that.

    upgrade or standalone?

IS this software an upgrade? is it something we can install if we don't already have iDVD? Apples info is weak, and I'd like to know.

I believe from listening to Steve's Speech introing the iPod that it will be free for download.
