The Tech Report evaluates Shuttle's SV24 bare-bones system, dubbed as a "cube for the rest of us." The Windows system design, based loosely on Apple's defunct Power Mac G4 cube, includes mouse, keyboard, serial, VGA, S-Video, parallel, composite video, dual IEEE 1394 (Firewire), Ethernet RJ-45, audio in, and audio out ports as well as a single PCI slot.

    Ugh

Not even a cube. Even the Cobalt Raq had a better design.

Wasn't there something at COMDEX, a cube 2 inches bigger, looked just like a G4 cube? Dragon something?

Look at those ports, then look at the price. That's about the price of Virtual PC for the Mac! I'd say it's a far better product at that price than our Cube was. Too bad it can't run Mac software.

Hey, I lost my name! The site always knew that I was Bugs and now I'm stuck with . Do I have to log in every time now? Why am I asking YOU this? You better go now, I'm starting to feel dangerous.

    Woohoo....

    yippee...brushed Aluminum (sarcasm)

That pretty much means they were too lazy to paint it, Brushed aluminum is a far cry from something like lets say....oh...Titanium. Anyway what do you say about that giant fan, I doubt it runs as quiet as a cube, and I definately would not want it sitting on top of my desk, especially if they can't match the 30 different shades of beige that are available in CD drives.

    $250

just so perple know, all this is, is a case and a mother bored (yes bored), you still need a hard drive, ram and at best a pent 3, so it will end up costing over $600 for it to be well equipt.

"As you can see, there's a single 60mm fan at the rear of the case for cooling. There's also an almost-silent little fan inside the power supply unit. Beyond that, only the CPU fan generates noise."

So in other words, beyond the first fan and the second fan, only the third fan makes noise (laugh). Oh, and the hard drive should you choose to add one. I realise the writer just likes the heck out of this case, but there are limits to skewed perspective in reviewing.

    Huh . . .

From the end of the "review":
"If hardware vendors are paying attention, the SV24 ought to be the first of many systems in a new class of mini-PCs. I know the Mac cubes failed, but hey, they were Macs. The SV24 is an open platform, the foundation for a hundred different products from a hundred different OEMs and PC hobbyists. All of that is enough to earn the SV24 the highest honor we can grant here at TR: a top ranking on our world-famous 11-point scale. No, the SV24 isn't perfect, but it's good enough—and innovative enough—to garner an 11."

Apparently, the "open platform" of PC's will bring success . . . last time I checked, it was Microsoft who was writing all their own (crappy) standards, and Apple who was adopting (mostly) open and generally accepted formats.
