People should realise that by swamping his CD drive (apple version) to another non-apple drive wil result in the inability to boot from a CD in a emergency situation. Apple uses a chip that is installed onto the CD drive and in order to boot from a emergency disc you have to have the apple version.
I noticed he said he can only burn using Toast... I'm looking for a drive to put in my Beige G3 minitower that will be recognized by OS X. Looks like the Sony won't work. I've looked at the list on Apple's site showing which external CD-RW's are supported, and I'm guessing that if I got the same internal mechanism it might work, but who know? Anybody have any success with this? I've got my G3 running great under OS X and the only thing I'm lacking is CD-RW...
get a external cdrw with usb and firewire in the back. in the future you can use it on your work peecees take it to friends use it on laptops and can keep it in a drawer until u need it for yours. a lot more versatility down the road also.
I put in a Phillips 16x burner to replace my DVD rom in a BW G3. It works just fine with Apple's Disc Burn, but I still have trouble with iTunes finding it.
To the "s**** that" guy, This is a much cheaper alternative than buying external. I paid 150 bucks for my 16x burner. How many firewire drives can you get for that price?
Plus, it works fine under clasic or OS X.
The guy who questions the newsworthyness of this is bordering on mac-head snobbery. There are a lot of novices who might want to tackle this, or just get ideas from it. It sure is more interesting than reading about mergers, acquisitions, and the stupid incremental program updates (that authors post just for the attention - what do they think versiontracker is for?)
And this upgrade is indeed cheap, that's another good point - I saw the is drive for under $100 - or 1/4 an iPod!
I don't know about this drive, but I could start my old Starmax with the Mac OS 9.1 CD I have. The drive that I had in it was an upgraded Memorex 24X CD (it came with an 8X when I first purchased it, it started up on my old Mac OS 8 CD fine as well).
I don't know if this one will work, but as far as I can tell apple uses a stock CD-Rom from who ever is their supplier at the time. (Although the the CD-Rom ext in OS 8 didn't seem to notice the 32X i originally installed and brout back, (it did load CDs, the Mac OS is great, but I didn't want it if both Apple and CD-Rom toolkit did't see it)).
Sorry I was rambling.

sorry didnt mean to come off sounding rude its just that after most begining mac users are done with thier imacs and want to upgrade years later to something a bit more roomy and powerfull a external will help out in the future. as for price a external lacie with 1 usb and 2 firewire ports is 200 in mac mall magazine months ago, 50 more bucks than your 16x internal. or if you could settle for a 8x or 12x cdrw they cost 140 to 160 respectivly.
also you could take your cdrw internal and buy a external case but that would cost about 80 to 150. i only mention this because i bought a internal cdr years ago and later had to buy a case for it so i could take it here and there. the only problem is that it was scsi and firewire came out, but firewire heres for a while so thats good.
also its not a apple rom which i had problems in the past with power computing clones etc.
plus with the way mac users are yelling at other mac users for whining about the price of the ipod i thought the majority of the mac communbity was loaded and could easily afford a external cdrw.

Just thought I'd let you guys know that the installed Sony CDRW boots the computer fine, both with the original system CD and burnt (Toast) bootable emergency discs.
I posted the upgrade for fun, but also because some people don't know how to get into their AIOs, I hope it is of use to someone!

Not to discredit "ScienceMan," because anyone putting ANY money into making a G3 MolarMac (the All-In-One) semi-useful again gets points in my book, but...
This is news? It's a simple drive swap, practically the same as in any Beige-series Macintosh. Remove cables, remove drive sled, put new drive on old sled, reattach cables, done.
