Readers posts OSX driver for Epson AIO

Marco E. Tabacchi writes about an "alpha quality" OS X printer driver for the Epson Stylus Scan 2500, saying that it supports basic printing (no scanning, no different resolutions, etc.), and "is in no way endorsed by EPSON. As EPSON announced no support for this AIO (all-in-one), I thought it would be interesting to know that there IS a way to print on a SS2500 under OSX"

    Works for SS2000 w/tweaks

I have a Stylus Scan 2000 and am appalled at Epson's lack of support for this device, considering its extreme similarity in design and function to the Epson printers and scanners. I visited the site, downloaded Marco's plugin, and changed the names of every file inside the package to "200" instead of "250" and "2000" instead of "2500". I also went into the ss250 (ss200 after the change) resource file and changed all the hex values in the same manner (using Resourceror's Find ASCII check box in the Hex -- Find menu item). I now have VERY BASIC access to the printing functions in my Epson Stylus Scan 2000. Nothing configurable, except application specific settings, but still - it's another limitation that's gone for now, in a very basic way.

Thanks to Marco for doing this. I emailed him about it at the address at the bottom of his page but it bounced. If anyone wants a copy of this Stylus Scan 2000 plugin to use at your own risk, post to this forum and let MacNN know, and I will get it out somehow - right now, i do not have a reliable distribution method.

Just for reference, this is very very basic printing access in OS X 10.1 via the Stylus Scan 2000 Multifuntion device from Epson, and the plugin is in NO WAY sponsored or supported by Epson or anyone.

    Stylus Scan 2000

I also have a SS 2000, and had almost decided to do the same manipulations as you did to Marco's/Epson's SS 2500 basic driver.

Of course, if the modified driver could be posted, available to all, on the Internet, that would be a great help for all SS 2000 owners out there! :-) (Let's hope the email adresses on Marco's site will be fixed soon: that site could indeed also be a good place to host the SS 2000 driver...)

I only wonder if Epson will further develop this basic Stylus Scan driver: if it was on a Mac OS X 10.1 CD (even if it was a "special" CD, as Marco says on his site), wouldn't it be at least reasonable to suppose that, eventually, Epson themselves will publish a finished and more featured driver...?

Let's hope -otherwise, I certainly will never buy an Epson anymore!

    My Guess...

My guess is that the driver that Marco used was basically the 740 driver and he changed all of the names in the resource file's data fork to read Stylus Scan 2500 instead of Stylus Color 740 and so forth. I bet he then changed the names of all the files to ss250 and ss2500 from sc740 and so on. My modifications are likely hacks of hacks.

I have contacted MacNN to see if there is a way to distribute this printer plugin to them or someone else for hosting, but in the meantime, if you prefer and feel comfortable doing so, you can do the mods to his file, and they will work with the limitations I pointed out above.

    Here it is...

    http://www.stealth.net/~asimov/epson/SS2000.sit

If that link works, and you own a Stylus Scan 2000 and want to print in OS X, download that file, unstuff it and read the included instructions. If the link doesn't work, copy this and use it: http://www.stealth.net/~asimov/epson/SS2000.sit

    Enjoy.

    Close but no cigar!

I have indeed hacked the 740 driver (I admit that I have tried a couple of other drivers before, with mixed results), but have also changed a couple of other strings related to the USB IOKit.

Happy that the SS2000 version works well. I'm curious to get in touch with some owner of a SC 740 to know if she/he can get access to other features (resolution, paper types) with the original driver.

    Happy printing with your AIO!
