Three of Apple's systems; the Power Mac G4 867MHz PowerPC G4, iBook 500MHz PowerPC G3, and PowerBook G4 500MHz PowerPC G4 were selected in the 2001 top 100 computer product listing compiled by ZDNet editors, including John Dvorak. Among the products selected as the bottom five for 2001 are 3Com's Audrey and Epson's Smart Cartridge.

Dvorak is an idiot but he's got a point about those bottom 5. Those are all pretty lame products. He may have been a little hard on the Audrey though. Sure, nobody wanted one and there's no market for a such a thing but it didn't seem like that terrible of a product.

    Anyone care?

Theit specs are out of date on the laptops and so is pricing. Plus, they throw in lines like "If you don't want a Windows Machine". I guess Windows actually gets you points in their opinion.

Plus, even though these are machines that were introduced in 2001, and maybe they are considering the older iBooks and PowerBooks to be better than the new ones (I don't know why), all of the other PC computers listed are up to date, current listings. Doesn't anyone bother to check these things before they are posted?

One of my favorites in the study: In the editor's choice, they say they configured their own Dell Inspiron with 32 MB RAM (not graphics memory). ;-)

    whats the date?

Last time I looked, it was still 2001, with 1/6th of the year left to go. Lots of time for M$ to introduce more boneheaded products.

I'm not surprised XP was listed as an editors pick, considering ZD has their tounge stuck up Gates & Co.'s backside, and need their advertising dollar...

    Windows XP editor Pick

but no mention of Mac OS X. You can forget about this 'top 100'.
They should call it 'Windows-based' computer Top 100.
    Lame.
    As usual.

    RE: Anyone Care?

I thought the same thing at first too (regarding out of date specs). But if you look the article was posted October 5, 11 days before the new PowerBooks came out. (Although this shouldn't stop anyone from updating information). However, if you try to get the "Latest Prices" on the Powerbook you get a list of iBook prices. Do your own search and you still don't get any mention of the new PowerBook speeds. So much for helpful resources.

    press time

(Although this shouldn't stop anyone from updating information).

Exactly. The losers talk about availabilty of information 'at press time', clearly demonstrating their last-century-attitudes (as if we need any more proof of that). 'Press time' on the web is each time you his 'Save'. But, boy, it sure sounds mighty interesting and reporter-like to say 'at press time'.

    Oh goodness

pricing info at stores are dated for machines, and YET, these are prices from before the price drop on Powerbooks in September, let alone the second price drop that occured with the new iBooks and Powerbooks released this month. I sent a complaint to the webmaster, and suggest you do the same.
