MS disables Hotmail access from Mac apps

updated 09:40 am EDT, Fri October 26, 2001

A recently updated support document at Microsoft's Website discusses security-related changes to Hotmail's email service, which disable access from Entourage 2001 and Outlook Express 5.02 when "you attempt to send or retrieve mail from a Microsoft MSN Hotmail account or attempt to configure a new Hotmail account after October 25, 2001...This behavior can occur because the Hotmail servers were updated on October 25, 2001 to provide greater security. These security updates disabled client programs' ability to gain access to or send mail from Hotmail."

    Office v.X

Does this affect Entourage X too? I don't use Hotmail but I guess some Mac users are going to be pissed off...

    Monopolistic?

Noooo! Not Microsoft? A company that buys up services and then limits them? Not Microsoft!

Further, that does limit the functionality of Entourage 2001. And since, as of today, it is the only version available, I would be pretty agressive in demanding a refund for that product, or at least that component, if I purchased Office 2001.

Ugg. That company really makes me unhappy.

    i cant believe it.

This is the all time crappiest thing that has ever happened. I hate going into a browser to check my mail! They better bring this support back!

    I wondered...

...what was going on. Entourage hasn't been able to retrieve Hotmail for a couple of days now. I just get error msgs.

The workaround for this? Go to hotmail.com. What a load of c***. What are they planning on doing then about those little wizards that pop up when you create a new Account, and it asks if you want to create a Hotmail account? You won't be able to use it!

    Bravo Microsoft, Bravo.

    Damn them!

This is horrible! I hope they fix their stupid security problem and bring it back soon. I haven't been to the hotmail website in years. and, maybe that's the real reason they've cut us off, we're missing all their beautiful banner ads.

    ditch Hotmail

Why use Hotmail. It only feeds the beast. There are lots of other free email services and there are many independent of your ISP pay email services that are not too expensive that don't attach advertising etc that only provide you mail. Why use Hotmail? Just say NO to Microsoft.

    Why ditch Hotmail??

I've had my hotmail account for 4 years now. I've never came across an eamil account that has been so stable. so I'm not going to ditch it just because I can't launch it in my entourage. I'm sure they'll start supporting it once office x comes out.

    This sucks!

Although their new my.msn.com that you can check your Hotmail from is beautiful! Nice new look for the XP launch I guess.

But their spam filter on the high settings is the best free e-mail spam filter out there! Thats why I prefer it to yahoo or lycos' free e-mail.

Also as a work around, just have MSN Messenger on and it will tell you if you have new e-mail and take you straight to the message as soon as you get it. Better than the 30 minutes you had to wait with Entourage or OE in the past!
