In an article for TheStreet entitled "Apple's Scraping the Bottom of the Barrel", author Arne Alsin says "Don't buy Apple's stock. And if you own it, sell it." Alsin claims that while Apple has "cool" products, investors are looking for profit. He opines that Apple's retail initiative is merely a last-ditch effort to generate product interest; "It's desperation time in Cupertino, California."

Sounds like desparation to sell a book. His ideas are about as baseless as they come. Surprising though coming at a time when most of these people ( in the face of the obvious ) have gone back under their rock.

Heard this all before

People have been saying this for the past 15 years. "Apple is going down the Tubes" Apple will never survive. things like that. All I need to say is Heard it all before and guess what Apple is still here. frankly I'm sick of hearing it. I wonder what would happen if an analyst said those things about M$. Apple has turned a Profit almost every quarter the past 3 years. So this is just crazy.

I have stock

Last time Apple was this low (actually lower around $14), I bought some shares. This was like 2-3 years ago I believe. I watied it out, and Apples stock rose up into the $100's and then even split.

The economy is doing crappy right now, almost all tech companies have piss-poor stocks. Apple's stock is low, bt it will bounce back. I sure as heck am not selling my stock (if anythign I would buy more). Buy low sel high.

PC wars....why

I remember learning how much money a company had to be loosing in order to make it "profitable" to fold (in my freshman econ class at U of Mich). I can't for the life of me understand how people could call for a company that is actually quite fiscally sound (and so far, following a sound, if conservative, business model) to close up shop!

Apple has always been the innovator. Microsoft has always been the mass marketer. It would be an interesting thought excercise to ponder what would happen to MS without the other companies innovating. With very minor exception, microsoft has created nothing. They do one h*** of a job making the technology accessible, however. (The thought of innovative companies without mass marketing counterparts is, likewise, an unpleasant vision.)

It may be true that wintel machines are the "best" choice for everyday home users, but Macs will always fill a niche that wintel machiness just can't cover. I really could care less if apple isn't an industry giant.

I will admit that I was underwhelmed by the iPod launch (maybe I'm showing my age), but I am impressed at what the launch means: Apple has recognized the maturity of the PC market and is starting to "innovate" in the "personal accessories" market. It signals a fundamental shift in demographic target, and may well keep apple on the right side of the growth curve.

As to the foam that seems to drip from the fangs of rabid devotees (on BOTH sides), I just don't understand why people can't understand the benefits of choice. Not just choice in the "look" of the machine (face it, PC's are all fairly similar except for the packaging - and that isn't really very different either) but in overall usability and function.

its like a doctor telling u ur gonna die for 20 years in a row. after awhile what he says is simply the case of him being a biased misinformed quack. how bout other deathwatch predictions? any odds on compaq/hp losing desktops all together and or gateway going under entirely or becoming just another tiny company that sells peecees? thats better deathwatch material than apple. FUD this!

Ummm...

People who predict Apple's demise can't realize that Apple MAKES ITS OWN HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE!!! That is completely and totally different from every PC company. Also, Apple is the biggest maker of digital video editing software, both consumer and professional. If they had to, they could do ONLY that and still be profitable. He doesn't get it. I'm gonna email him.

Like everyone else in the stock market who has any say....... this knucklehead is clueless. Granted, we'd all like to see market share grow which would be a good indication of Apple's health. But this doom and gloom reporting needs to be taken with a grain of salt. After all. These are the same chuckleheads who were saying buy EMC when it was at 102.38 back on 9/29/00. And where is EMC today?

Anyone who puts faith in anyone other than themselves when trading the market is destined to take a severe beating. Learn how to invest.... be it Technical Analysis, Fundamentals or both, not to mention short selling. And don't forget to use a stop loss on every trade. If you take time to learn the rules of the game you can beat these boneheads/nayayers at their own game.

Could be good

If comments like this drive the share price down (hopefully below $15) then buying when this article has had its impact, then sitting on the shares for a few years could be the ticket to much riches.

A tip:

Steve's stock options have an average strike price of around $42. Which means he can't make anything on them until the share price exceeds that.

Which means, Steve Jobs will do everything in his considerable power to get the stock price higher over the period of the next 5 to 10 years.

What I'm saying is that when Steve is up against the wall, I'd take cover from the shrapnel!

You ain't seen the best from Apple yet, not by a long stretch.

Apparently, Arne Alsin didn't do his research and totally wrote his article using baseless ideas with no merit whatsoever. How can Apple develop "cool" products without profiting first from its previous offerings? Despite him not doing his homework in the first place, I think this jerk's just being paid by these PC companies to make Apple look bad whether by lying through his teeth or what. Does he think that investors don't do their homework as well and that they'll listen to him? It's very sad that our market is so corrupt and illegit with these "analysts" working only in the interests of the Windows PC makers and not the true investors.

No idea

What people like Alsin don't understand is that there is enough space for more than one OS. Not everyone wants to drive an BMW with a full aluminium body, ABS, leather seats etc etc, some people want a cheap little runaround. And that's fine, but it doesn't mean that the innovative company that makes quality products will go out of business. It just means that their market is smaller. Not always a bad thing if you ask me.
