Microsoft has posted Internet Explorer 5.0sr1, a "Service Release" which it says resolves two known issues in IE 5.0:

  1. The Windows Media Player, Macromedia Flash, and Apple QuickTime plug-ins can cause Internet Explorer to stop responding.
  2. The use of Microsoft Entourage 2001 for Mac and Internet Explorer 5.0 at the same time may cause Entourage to stop responding.

    Yawn...

Should we expect more from our free browsers? What do you think we would get if we had to pay for this kind of software? Would it be worth it?

    mmm k...

I just ran this update, then opened up IE, to see if the version changed, and to my surprise it still says 5.0 (2022)

    Way to go M$!

    [check extensions]

I'd bet that if you check MS related extensions, et al, you'd find that there are a few with a VERY recent modification or creation date....

    RE: check extensions

Funny that! I just posted a criticism of the way the new look of the site seems to be dominated by ads, and Big Brother MacNN deleted it! What I had said was that everyone gripes about poor clickthroughs, but no one gripes about how terribly advertising is executed on sites like MacNN. Is it any wonder clickthroughs never happen? I know I never click any out-of-context, in-my-face animated ads....why bother?

I'll keep this on topic (it's gone anyway folks--MacNN is a bit like Microsoft, it seems) from here on out. The IE update does, in fact change several MS related extensions to a newer date. You also can click "support" from the "about" box and check the Release Number. It's changed since before the upgrade

    New Library Only!

The log file created by the SR installer shows that all it did was install some tiny library file in the Internet Explorer 5 folder. I can find no other evidence that anything was changed.

By the way, does anyone know if there is a list of "known issues" with IE 5. I'd like to know what percentage of the known bugs were solved by this release and if any of the bugs on the list are things which I can vouch for. I always leave IE 5 and Entourage running and when I switch to IE and hit apple-L to open a new window, more often than not the computer will freeze and I need to force a reboot.

    Updater Bummer

I have been told that once you run this installer you should get this info from the about box "5.1.3 (3905)" however mine did not change from "5.0 (2022) running it again wont help because it says that I dont need to. Me thinks there is a problem with this updater.

    re: Update Bummer

Build 3905 is the IE build after the security update in OS X, not OS 9.
The update is for the classic version of IE. there is no change in the build number, remaining at 2202. AFAIK, the only update in the downloadable SR is a single library file in the IE folder - the build number doesn't change in IE proper.

    already installed

It's probably the same thing that I've seen on new QuickSilver G4 Macs here at work; they all have a SR1 library extension loose in the Internet Explorer folder. Looks like they're making it available for the rest of us now.

These problems these updates fix have been known since Office 2001 was released. (more than 8 months ago? longer?) took them long enough!
