A MacNN reader notes that his new iBook 600 DVD arrived today: "I ordered it through the On-line Apple Educational Store. I've posted images of the A/C adapter next to the old round a/c adapter. Also, I've included a photo of the build version of OS x that it came with: Build 5L14."

    5L14

I'm running 5L14 too. It's what the security update puts you at. Except mine says 10.1 in the "About This Mac"

    Click it...

If you click where you see 10.1, it will reveal the build number... another click and you get your serial number.

    How weird...

I had no idea I had been bumped up to 5L. Wonder if those security updates had some other stuff in the mix... ??

    384 MB is good!

384 MB is hitting the sweet spot for Mac OS X.

For an iBook that ships with 128 MB on the motherbooard, adding a 256 MB chip is very inexpensive option: $30 to $35 is quite affordable.

Here's one (very dependable IMHO) source of iBook memory:

    Recycled Design???

Is it just me or does that new ac adapter look almost identical to the ones you used to get with Duos? As I remember the two prongs popped out to wrap the cord around the same way as it looks like you do on this one and I also remember it coming with a plug to hook it directly to the wall as well as a cord... seems like someone just took a Duo AC Adapter, changed the way the plug connects and made it white...

Definitely looks like it. Not, that I'm complaining. I think it's a much better design than the "YoYo".

    Re: AC Adaptor

I am sure DELL will copy the new brick and claim they invented it and were first to ship it. Just watch.

Besides who cares if its been done before, someone obviously either did work on the Duo brick and suggested it for the iBook, or some Apple engineer dug through the old IP and thought it would be a good design to use for a consumer-orientated laptop that is selling like MAD.

You really can't tell based off a build number. They're incremented each time you do a recompile of code, but nothing determines when you recompile (could be a boatload of changes, could be a tweak here or there). You could make a 30 builds to fix one bug. ANd they in theory could have increased the number just to increase it.
