Afternoon tech news: A Forrestor Survey report claims that Bluetooth devices will outstrip wireless LAN nodes (including AirPort enabled devices) 10 to 1, but that both wireless access methods will be able to co-exist; Yahoo is set to unveil a new version of its instant messaging client that includes the ability to assign animated backdrops, allowing marketers to brand the software; AOL Time Warner inked a deal to bring an entertainment cable channel to South China in exchange for airtime on US stations.

    Misinformation!

Does anyone else think this is a load of c***? I do.

Bluetooth is all hype and this report is complete speculation at best. Have you ever seen anyone using a blue toothdevice? Nope, and I predict that you won't.

I can't believe that they're still reporting this as news. The same exact story has been published for like four years now. There just isn't any reason to believe that this technology will succeed until someone ponies up the money to speculate on a nationwide network.

    Pull that Bluetooth!

The only Bluetooths I have ever seen were in Lake County, CA .. and most of them fell out of their owner's mouth after neglect and substance abuse..... we used to call them , "SpookyTooth."

Forrester Lars's 2006 prediction is nothing short of a shot in the dark ..

2.4 Ghz is a crowded bandwidth, and if they continue on this path, Bluetooth will surely fail.

One thing the industry investors will remember when it is gone ... that it really "Blew....."

    Two Different Concepts

AirPort is a long range, high bandwith networking technology - essentially Ethernet using radio waves instead of a copper wire.

BlueTooth is a short range low bandwith interconnect kinda like a wireless low-speed USB.

The report is misleading in phrasing, making it sound like wireless LAN will be put out by BlueTooth when in fact they are two totally different concepts and technologies that share some underlying features (being wireless pretty much).

About all that BlueTooth could do is allow a Palm-type PDA to sync by placing it near a computer, or some type of interaction between a cell phone and PDA to dial out or access the Internet.

This new Apple device may very well leverage AirPort to connect to a Mac wirelessly for whatever it will need to be connected to a Mac to do (Digital Hub and all that). Find out tomorrow. Maybe it will use BlueTooth? Who knows...

    not even ms

MS dropped Bluetooth from XP, right? (in fact they now claim to ben the first with 802.11 support - http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/011022/sfm057_1.html - no mention of Bluetooth in that press release...)

So this must be an Intel sponsored piece of FUD.

    Yahoo?

Has anyone noticed that Yahoo has almost zero support for Mac? There "most current" version for Mac is extremely dated and barely works in OS 8-9. It doesn't have any of the features (webcam?) or bonuses (more smileys) that the Windows version has.

OS X? Nope... and it doesn't look like its even in the works.

At least AOL IM has an OS X version! Unfortunately, all my friends use Yahoo IM, so its not like I can switch.

If you want webcam on Y!

Use http://homepage.mac.com/chitchat it supports Yahoo webcam and sending and receiving files, and now supports buddy lists on Yahoo. The show profile is a bit buggy, but http://profile.yahoo.com/username works for any user who has a profile.

    Yahoo Messenger

Yahoo needs to be prodded (sharply!) about their miserable Mac support. In the meanwhile, check out Fire (http://www.epicware.com/)--it is a multiple-service IM app that works pretty well with Yahoo, as well as AIM and Jabber. It's free, too.
