Apple is expected to soon distribute an "Internet Explorer Security Update" via its Software Update Control panel in OS X. The update, recommended for all OS X users and Internet Explorer 5.1 for Mac, is in response to a vulnerability found in Internet Explorer 5.1 for Mac, according to Microsoft, although details were not provided. (The update was expected to be released Friday evening.)

    Hmm...

5 PM on the West coast and I'm getting a "Your software is up to date" message in Software Update. I'm running OS X 10.1. Is anyone else out there having problems installing today's update? Maybe I'm just hitting a server that hasn't been synced up yet?

    bin/hqx execution

I bet it's to fix the .bin/.hqx problem...all they need to do is modify a preference setting. I hope it's not something I need to restart for; I'm going on eighteen days of uptime with my laptop!

    It said 3PM

An earlier story on the MacNN home page said it was out as of 3:00 PM on the West coast.

    just got it

two updates, restart required for one of them:

One is an IE update: "The Internet Explorer 5.1 Security Update addresses a security vulnerability in the Internet Explorer 5.1 Download Manager. All users are strongly encouraged to install this update to prevent automatic execution of downloaded files. This update supports use in English, Japanese, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Swedish." Sets IE to v5.1.3.

the other is a Security Update: "Important update that provides increased security for application access privileges." It requires a restart.

Both updates are a little under 2 MB.

    IE and Netinfo fixes

With the 2 patches IE will not execute downloaded files and the root access problem with Netinfo and running recent applications is fixed.

The Security update takes awhile to install. Just be patient.

    I just installed it

I just installed the update on 10.1. The security update fixed the setuid terminal/netinfo bug as described earlier.

    Go Apple!

That was quick. the root vulnerablilty has been fixed and the patch made available through software update in how long was that, four days?

Don't use IE in X anyway.

    Hmmm...

I just ran the software updater, but I only got the Security Update that requires the restart. not the update to IE. Odd.
