Matsushita working on 100 GB DVD

As noted previously, Matsushita is working on a new DVD format that could be capable of storing 50 GB per disc side using blue lasers. That capacity would allow for more than two hours of high definition video, according to Matsushita officials. Meanwhile, Plasmin is working on a DVD flavor that could eventually reach 1 terabyte of storage.

    It's the content, stupid

All that storage and nothing to put on it. Now we can have HD versions of "Dr. Doolittle 2" and "Porkys"...oh joy.

No, seriously, all that space is great and I hope that it'll be put to good use. To find DVD movies that don't have extra content or wide screen versions as a choice when viewing is inexcusable (e.g. The Great Waldo Pepper and Sorcerer, just to name a couple that are not letter-boxed on the DVD).

    ..or Stupid Content.

There is also FMD. 25-150Gig of storage. And possibly a terabyte in the near future.

HDTV needs MORE than current DVD capacities. If we are to see HDTV-quality movies/productions, the capacity to cheaply store and distribute is needed.

I would have to say that the old tale about the "hard drive" being bigger than the "tape backup" is still true.

    stop already...

Standards need to be set for consumer media. We have the CD and DVD now. We haven't even sorted DVD-A or SACD and now we're about to get blue laser or flourescent disc storage for HDTV. WTF i thought DVD was supposed to extend up to 18GB (2 layer 2 sides) Couldn't they just write some algorithim to get at least 1280*720 30fps out of the damned thing? Short sighted greedy b*******!!!

    No, it's good

Greedy? These things don't carry the margins that you think they do. And This has always been in the roadmap. They've been talking about the yet-to-be invented "blue laser" since the original DVD spec was made. So, they came out with old players as a stopgap solution. The nice thing here is the level of backward compatability is very high. At least you won't need to buy a new copy of "heartbreakers"

    Come on!

This is sweet! Plus, if you had a TB DVD-R and some DivX movies, you could fit like 1200 movies on one disc!!!!

You could fit an MP3 of pretty much every song in history on one of those.
