Opera 5.0b2 browser has paid, sponsored modes

updated 10:05 am EDT, Thu October 18, 2001

Opera Software has released Opera 5.0b2 for OS X, which offers the ability for users to register the $40 browser to support continued development of the browser or use a ad-sponsored version with a "small banner." Beta 2 also offers users the ability to search bookmarks, autofill forms and filter cookies.

    $40?

At that price, it will have a hard time competing with Netscape, Internet Explorer, and iCab. "Small Banner?" - no, thanks. Maybe they expect us to be SOOOO prejudiced against Microsoft that we will resort to anything...

    This release crash-prone

This newest release is too crash-prone. I gave up and am back to IE 5.1.

This version is taking a pounding on Version Tracker for OS X

    Hang on killer.

I am writing this from Opera 5b2 right now. This browser is fast and efficient and you do not have to pay for the browser you can allow the banners to be shown and use it for free. You can also pay them for a copy and this removes the banners and allow a few more features.

I for one will kick down $39 for this browser just like I did for OmniWeb and will for iCab. Remember that iCab is not going to be free either they will have a light version for free and a full featured version for $25-30 bucks.

I gladly support these three companies because I want alternatives to Internet Exploder and Netscape.

Remember you do not have to pay for any of these browser unless you:
    A. You want to encourage companies to support the Mac platform.
    B. You do not want to use these products.

Opera on OS X is the fastes damn browser! OmniWeb is my second choise followed by Mozilla and lastly Microsoft Internet Exploder/Invader.

Opera 5b2 does crash if you have previously turned the button bar off. I turned it back on and most of my crashes are gone. But remmber this is a Beta not a finished product.

One more comment there adherence to web standards is way better then Exploders.

    Just something to think about.

    sorry but

Opera is competing against a free browser which currently has a better interface: Explorer

Better drag+drop, better url completion, better new window size...

Opera may be fast, but the interface sucks

    pretty weak...

Pretty weak that a company gets paid to "continue development" for a beta browser. Potentially, they never have to release a supported version. They could just continue to release unsupported betas, and people would be paying (either cash or in ads) all the same. Pretty lame business strategy if you ask.

    $40? For What?

No java support. No wheel mouse support. Feature inequity with other platforms. No assurance a working version will ever be available.

Do not get me wrong. I am more than willing to support MacOSX programmers willing to give it a fair shot. I expect them to prove themselves.
