Apple unit sales breakdown, iBooks drive mix

Apple shipped 850,000 units for the fourth fiscal quarter of 2001, a decline of 24% from the prior year quarter. Most unit sales decreased from the same quarter last year, including iMac (294,000, -49%), Power Mac G4 (248,000, -34%), and PowerBook (57,000, -34%). iBook sales, however, did increase by 182% over the prior year quarter and totalled 251,000. Unit sales in each of the regions dropped (totalling nearly 25%) compared with the prior year quarter; however, Apple saw sequential gains in the Americas (6%) and Europe/Middle East/Africa (14%), and signficant sequential declines of 23% in Japan, which the company said was its weakest region, as with other PC makers.
