BBEdit 6.5 adds CSS support, new grep engine

updated 11:30 am EDT, Wed October 17, 2001

BBEdit 6.5, the newest release of Bare Bones' advanced text editor, includes a sundry of new features, including markup and syntax coloring support for Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), integration with Mac OS X's Unix command-line scripting systems, an all-new grep engine with Perl-compatible regular expression syntax, syntax coloring for grep patterns in the Find dialog, snap-to-grid palette dragging and resizing. The tool is priced at $120 for the full version and $80 for a cross-upgrade. Those who purchased BBEdit 6.1 on or after August 1, 2001 are eligible for a free upgrade and will automatically be sent free upgrades starting within the next 2-3 weeks, while other registered users can upgrade for $40. yikes!

$39.00 for a .5 upgrade? Taking lessons from Apple? ;) I mean, yeah, BBEdit rocks, and I'll probably end up purchasing it anyway because I'm a p****, but still. I have to vent about something. =)

    $39 upgrade

The cross upgrade is $79, but the key is for all those BBEdit users out there, the upgrade is only $39! I think there are some version limitations, but I would pay $100 for this thing, so at $39 it's a no-brainer. Apparently, for those using it in X with IE 5.1.2, this solves the preview with feature under the mark up menu.

    pricey .5 update...

.. but worth it. $35 for a .5 update is a little pricey. Companies are starting to do this more and more often, which I don't like. But a company like Barebones with a product as good as BBEdit deserves to be supported. I already placed my order.

    Upgrade from 6.1

$39.00 for an upgrade to a .5 version. Normally, i would questions this, but since it is BBEdit...who cares!!

Barebones rocks and I will always gladly give them my money because you know that you are getting a top notch program from a great company.

*shoves my money on the table*

    $39 is very worth it

This is the third OS X release for BBEdit, and considering that I'm still running a lot of apps in classic, that's saying something. Also, BareBones has really integrated it into the (dramatically different) system and answered the needs of the power user here. Command line interface, perl integration, and the ability to edit all your .conf files right in BBEdit!

And while you're buying it, pick up super get info too...

    Drag & Drop

Hey, BareBones. Since you guys read the feedback here, have you fixed the Drag & Drop bugs from 6.0 yet?
You couldn't drag into the Find dialog from clippings, etc.

I'm sticking with 5 for budget reasons, but come January...

    $39!

Wow, an upgrade price of $39 for a piece of software that doesn't suck? Why is Bare Bones such a good Mac shop? Why do they listen to their customers? And why, oh why do they charge so little for so much?

I've been a dedicated user since version 2.7 and BBEdit remains one of the best reasons to own a Macintosh.
