Readers: Phantom Menace DVD not Mac-friendly

updated 09:30 pm EDT, Tue October 16, 2001

Several readers continue to write about the inability to play Star Wars Episode I, The Phantom Menace DVD on a Mac:

[Matt Willis] "I've bene following this for a few days now and wanted to try it out myself for sure--the Star Wars Episode I, The Phantom Menace DVD is not Mac compatible. Furthermore, the DVD states there is exclusive content for DVD-ROM owners online. But this content is limited to PC DVD-ROM users *only*. Nothing on the packaging states anything about this "limitation." The message board at www.starwars.com are already alight with complaint from avid Mac-user about this. The site has said the trailer for Episode II will only be available online through the DVD-ROM exclusive weblink, and the trailer will be in Quicktime format!!! So the trialer will be presented with Apple technology, but no Apple computer will be able to view it!"

[Douglas Bergère] "I just got my copy of Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace. I would like to see the DVD ROM extras. It seems that the DVD is unplayable on myPowerBook Pismo. I tried several times and actually got the disk to mount once out of a couple dozen tries. I’m running Mac OS X 10.1. I tried on Mac OS 9.2.1 as well with similar results. I have had trouble with my DVD drive in the past so I tried a different PowerBook, also a Pismo, running Mac OS 9.1 — same results. I then tried on a iMac SE. The only way to eject the DVD was to reboot and hold down the mouse button.

"Finally I tried on my Yosemite G3 B&W running Mac OS 9.1. The disc mounted fine the first time. Now that I have the disc mounted my trouble is just beginning. There is a Win folder but nothing that looks like a Mac file. I double clicked on the index.htm file and Internet Explorer opened up a blank window. Down deep in one Naboo folder, I did get a picture to pop up. Clicking on the picture took me to http://dvd.starwars.com which apparently is over whelmed by visitors. I just happen to have a two copies of Phantom Menace and none of the 4 discs work."

    Same here..

    Just bought the DVD
movie plays fine but everything else didnt' work (IE the extra PC features)

I haven't tried running VPC yet to see if that will work I will try that tomorrow.

With most PC only features you just broswed the DVD and opened the index.html file and everything worked This one is strange because it uses JAVA to verify you have the DVD.

    Comments.

The first guy states that it don't mention anywhere that the DVD-ROM content don't work with Mac. That is simply not true. Although it is not in big shiny letters across the cover. There IS a note on the back of it... At the bottom... It's small ;)

Oh. I was completly unable to playback the extras DVD in Mac OS X BTW. DVD Player keeps crashing after the intro. Haven't tried the movie disk tho. I usually prefer the 32" widescreen TV set to my 17" LCD screen =)

    check this out

this is a message from the starwars board. purports to explain why we're locked out. sounds like FUD to me... The gauntlet is thrown: is verifying a given dvd title in the drive IMPOSSIBLE in MacOS as they claim?

    --- original post follows ---

jedicharlie - "Cost" wasn't the issue. I talked with techs from InterActual directly (see earlier posts in this forum) - they said the issue was:
1.) Didn't have room for their Mac installer on the DVD's.
2.) Even if they DID have room, it wouldn't work with this particular content because it was designed to use their Windows only plug-in which authenticates that you are running the DVD through their player. That is the key that allows you access.
They don't offer a Mac solution at all for this content - nor will they ever according to them as their technology relies on stuff within the Windows OS.

    Ah well...

It was a bullshit overrated film anyway. Someone will grab that episode II trailer post it somewhere for the world to see. So no worries.

Also, we know mr Lucas likes macs so it's probably just some peecee geek who thought he'd narrow his mind just that little bit more and forget about the rest of the world.

    re: check this out

it could very well be true that it was using windows-only technology to verify the dvd was there. heck, IE is so integrated into Windows, this is probably the case.

at the same time, it doesn't mean it's impossible on the Mac. the only problem is that one person said it uses java to verify the dvd. if this is the case, i wouldn't be surprised if they just got too frustrated. os 9 doesn't support java 2 and os x and ie for os x has problems integrating java into the browser. i've got some applets that actually work in os 9 and not in os x. and there are some that work in os x and not os 9.

    Who cares

Episode 1 sucked pretty bad... why is everyone up in arms about this. 90% of the DVDs out there don't work right with the Mac. I don't see why MacNN has to have a front page article about Starwars episode 1 not working. I don't see postings about movies actually worth the attention not working. Starwars 4,5,6 was with the heart in mind, Starwars 1 was with the wallet in mind. BTW: Jar-Jar can die.

    Can someone tell us...

exactly what works and what doesn't?
So far all the comments have been confusing.
Can you actually see the movie? Can you hear the commentary? Can you see the additional scenes? Etc.
That would help a lot, thanks!

    iBook 500 All content OK

I have not had any problems with either Disk 1 or 2 in my 500 MHz combo drive. The only exception is to the internet content at http://dvd.starwars.com . Everything else works fine, including all of the content on Disk 2. Granted, I have not watched every secon of the video yet as there is over three hours of extra content. But I have accesed all of the menus and sub-menus with no problem whatsoever.
