The AP on Mac OS X: change is good

updated 01:00 am EST, Thu November 23, 2000

", 0, 0);

The Associated Press (republished by USA Today) is the latest publication to review Mac OS X, concluding: "Long-time users may complain of a learning curve, given how much OS X differs from its predecessors. But the stability, speed and visual stunningness of the new system far outweigh the familiarity of the old. One important note of advice, though: I wouldn't recommend installing OS X unless you're an experienced computer user who doesn't mind weathering a beta's turbulence. "

    AP non-Tech oriented

This article is not targeted at experienced computer users who are very knowledgable of the state of the industry and Apple's role in that industry.
Key distictions are often left out, like the open sourced portion, Darwin, is just the core of the OS. The lack of acurate detail makes this article seem like the same useless filler that is in most of the media today.
It is a mostly positive article and does cover a lot of ground though. For those reasons it's a article for USA Today, and people who want a general idea of what's up with Mac OS X.

    DVD on OS X?

Did the author actually use OS X? I quote:
"The Mac OS X (say ten) beta did fine while I
watched DVDs, listened to MP3s, tested some new and old applications and surfed the Web."
As far as I know, OS X does not support DVD yet...

    Crashing, DVD ??

I also doubt this guy actually used OS X ! You absolutely cannot play DVDs on MacOS X - yet ! That part is 100% BS. And he also says it crashed - a lot - on his G4 Cube. Well, if that's the case he's the only person I've heard say this; almost all other testers, including myself, have never seen the OS crash once.

On the whole, a seriously dubious account.

Crashing - I think it can

I wrote a review of OS X for The Independent - MacNN did carry a link to it (you can find it via http://www.independent.co.uk/digital if it's still up, or look at MacNN's recent news pages, and the OS X pages.
I don't disbelieve the crashing: I managed it, on a Firewire PBook, twice I think (I explain the "I think" in my article). OK, he got the point about the core being open-source wrong; big deal. Perhaps he was watching DVDs in Classic?
It seemed a rounded, sensible review and matched my experiences and those of a lot of folk I've seen in newsgroups. It's good, it's not perfect, and it's got a lot of people excited. The end, of the beginning, of the story.

    plain wrong reviews

"Perhaps he was watching DVDs in Classic? "

thats the sorry state of journalism at the moment. not even getting facts correct.
I would have thought that as a writer for the Indy, you'd have been a bit less forgiving than that, because if he's not writing correct and factual reviews, you have to ask what the f**k is he doing?

    Not the case

Um (I posted the 'Crashing, DVDs?' message). AFAIK, you cannot watch DVDs in Classic (and that's the only option to try, as the DVD player application is not a Carbon application).

The reviewer said something to the effect of the OS crashed "a lot". Once or twice is not "a lot"; he gave the impression that the OS was very unstable, which is patently not the case in all the reports I have read. He also says it's full of bugs - as far as I'm concerned it's amazingly bug-free for Beta software.

I also doubt his claims of the OS being "as fast as amy Mac I've used". Everybody else, including myself, has commented on the sluggish feel of MacOS X PB, something that will undoubtably be fixed before final.

I also have to take issue with this 1.2% figure

    It just doesn't add up.

    Crashes(?), faster(?)

Well, I do really doubt about the fact that this guy used Mac OS X PB too.
I installed it on my Bondi Blue iMac (233 MHz, 160 MB Ram) just to get a feel of the upcoming next Mac OS.

    1. If something ever crashed, it was a program, which never made the whole OS crash: exactly as was promised, you do not have to start up the whole computer again.

    2. It certainly isn´t faster than any other Mac OS, it is sluggish and yes, of course it does have some bugs: Beta, remember?! Comparing with Netscape 6 PR and even the socalled Netscape 6 ¨final version¨ (which imho still is beta) it is quite rock-solid.

    3. It is really nice to see how Mac OS 9.x programs behave while running operating system X in Classic Mode, very cool and much better than the Virtual PC stuff; it really looks like you are in Mac OS 9.x, although finally you shouldn´t want to be remembered to that Mac OS, at least that should be Apple´s goal I suppose (unlike Windoze people who sometimes remember me that it actually was a better time for them when using ms-dos...)

My guess is that these socalled journalists a. are under a lot of deadline-pressure (who isn´t?) or b. got a mission to cover this ¨new¨ OS that Apple seems to have launched:
-¨Rent a Mac and see how this new stuff works¨
-¨But I am only used to Windows!
-¨Doesn´t matter, just write something about it, people don´t know anyway¨.

    Stop fighting each report

Does it not make sense to you all that all of these media outlets who are reporting on X have no idea what they're using, and often fail to mention that Apple only intends this software to be of beta quality???

Everyone remember back to public testing of Chicago??? All the new features and changes and this and that, and rarely a mention of "still crashes with abundant regularity" or other negative notes. M$ may control the market, but they're also bamboozled the press, and that's money in the bank.

So if you value the opinions of the uninformed, and care about speed in a PB, then you deserve to be disappointed. Form your own opinions, write your own columns. But don't come to a news site and think that you're petty B'ing and M'ing is going to change anyone's perceptions..you're preaching to a basically converted audience...*sigh*
