Apple is being forced to comply with the Australian Consumer Law, in another legal argument over its warranties. An investigation by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) found that Apple staff in the country misapplied Apple's policies for 14-day returns and 12-month limited manufacturer's warranty, instead of ones required under the ACL itself.

A small-time inventor in New Zealand has accomplished something giant rival Samsung has not: he has won against Apple in court. The case revolved around Hayden Crowther's use of the name "driPhone" for his line of waterproof phone cases. Apple, obligated by trademark law to "aggressively" protect its trademarks or risk losing them, sued over the concern that consumers would think the cases were an Apple product. A New Zealand court disagreed.
Microsoft will reportedly roll out a new addition to its line of Surface devices, one with a form factor closer to that of Apple's iPad mini. This according to WPDang, which claims that the device may launch in the first half of next year. The move would be the latest in a series that has seen Microsoft attempting to combat the growth of iOS and Android in the mobile computing market, a segment that appears on track to replace traditional personal computers as the dominant computing paradigm.
Apple's online store today offers a range of refurbished desktop Macs as low as $509. The refurbished Mac mini with a 2.5GHz Intel dual-core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM and 500GB hard drive has been cut to $509. The last Apple digital storefront has now added a "gift" option, just in time for the holidays. On Tuesday, Apple activated gifting to the iBookstore, allowing customers to buy and send e-books either immediately or on a specific date. The company had previously enabled the option for apps, movies, TV shows and music back in 2010. The option is available on all e-books, and iTunes Store credit can be used to purchase the gift.
Apple's iPad and iPhone are among the most desired items being mentioned on Twitter for this holiday season, according to one analysis. In a new report released on Tuesday, analyst Gene Munster pointed to a Piper Jaffray study of more than 25,000 tweets, claiming that the iPhone and iPad were among the items most mentioned in connection with a desired gift. The findings appear to jibe with Apple CEO Tim Cook's earlier prediction that this holiday season would be "an iPad Christmas."

Screenflick is a tool for capturing desktop recordings at up to 60 fps. The software is capable of recording any portion of the screen, as well as simultaneously recording audio from internal or external microphones and the system audio. The update fixes a problem that was affecting Retina Macs, and now offers more detailed error reports for some errors. Stability has also been improved.

UK satellite television broadcaster Sky has announced that Apple TV users in the UK can watch Sky Sports content. The Now TV app enables users to sign up for a day pass that provides access to six Sky Sports channels, including four standard channels, the Sky Sports News channel and another dedicated to Formula One racing.
Samsung could be expanding its retail efforts in the future, with potential help reportedly coming from a senior Apple Store designer. The telecoms arm of the electronics producer in the United States has allegedly tapped Tim Gudgel to create its own full retail stores, as the company looks to expand from its current store-within-a-store concept it currently operates inside Best Buy outlets.

Google has released a new app for iOS, one that allows owners of its Google Glass wearable computing device to pair their headsets with an iPhone or iPad. The new MyGlass for iOS app hit the App Store on Tuesday, expanding Google Glass' compatibility beyond the Android operating system. Google notes in the app's description that the app does of course require having access to the search giant's still-in-beta head-mounted computer in order to be of any use.

Quark has introduced a maintenance update for its QuarkXPress publishing software. Version 10.0.2 primarily focuses on performance and stability improvements. The release is claimed to represent the first v10.0 build to beat QuarkXPress 9 in many performance categories, though the company admits that panning/scrolling speed is one exception that will be resolved early in 2014.

AT&T has signed a deal with Everything Everywhere in the United Kingdom, allowing the US carrier's subscribers access to the 4G network when visiting, in a similar deal to one between AT&T and Rogers in Canada. Though the pricing of the deal were not disclosed, Pocket Lint reports that EE customers will be able to get 4G speeds from AT&T's network in the US in the first half of 2014.
