Apple calling for Yosemite app submissions following GM seeding

On Tuesday, Apple signaled the end of active development of the first official version of OS X 10.10 Yosemite with the seeding of the "Golden Master," a one-last-lookover build that will be used as the final first release if no show-stopping bugs are found. An email was sent to registered developers calling for app submissions ahead of the upcoming launch of Yosemite, though no date or deadline was given. The existence of a GM candidate suggests that Yosemite is not far from being released to the public.

Pebble cuts smartwatch prices by $50, adds activity tracking

Pebble, the Kickstarter-funded smartwatch, has been updated with some new functionality, and new prices. An incoming update for the smartwatch will enable activity tracking functionality for the first time, with the manufacturer dropping the price of both the standard Pebble and the Pebble Steel by $50, bringing them to $99 and $199 respectively.

Mac owners and fans of the cel-shaded shooter series set on Pandora will be happy to learn that Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is launching on OS X alongside PC and game consoles on October 14. Aspyr Media is publishing the title, working with Gearbox Software and 2K Games to make the simultaneous launch possible. The game will support cross-platform multiplayer, as well as content through Gearbox Software's Shift or Steam if purchased there.

Evercore raises AAPL to $125 on increased iPhone demand

Apple is not the only company that believes the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will not only drive a bigger upgrade cycle, but also bring at least some switchers from the Android platform. Evercore Partners analyst Rob Cihra has reiterated his "overweight" rating for AAPL and raised the price target to $125, along with encouraging investors to buy the stock in a new memo to clients. He also published optimistic estimates for both the September and December quarters in terms of iPhone sales.

Apple broke off talks with PayPal because of Galaxy S5, sources claim

Apple and PayPal were indeed in talks regarding Apple Pay, but those were cancelled after Samsung signed a deal to let people make PayPal transactions using the fingerprint sensor on the Galaxy S5, sources say. The people suggest that Apple was so upset that it not only backed out of talks but chose to exclude PayPal as an acceptable platform in developer documentation. Blame has been laid on eBay CEO John Donahoe, who went ahead with the Samsung deal despite opposition from former PayPal president David Marcus, who reportedly believed it might cause problems with Apple.

Settlement checks from liquid damage lawsuit arriving for iOS owners

Participants in a class action lawsuit regarding liquid damage indicators for the iPhone and iPod touch are beginning to receive settlement checks, accounts say. In April 2013, Apple agreed to pay $53 million to compensate people who may have been denied warranty coverage because of the indicators. Their maker, 3M, admitted that they could be tripped simply by humidity. Apple later adjusted its policies to require additional checks before blocking repairs, but the lawsuit continued.

SteelSeries revamps Siberia line, unveils Siberia v3, Prism models

Apple to announce Q4 earnings on October 20

An earnings call is scheduled for 2PM Pacific time that day, or 5PM Eastern, but the company typically issues a press release about 30 minutes beforehand. Barring unexpected developments, the call should include commentary by CEO Tim Cook and CFO Luca Maestri as they respond to questions from analysts and investors.

Early buyers: Galaxy Note 4 case gap large, business card fits in void

First purchasers of the Galaxy Note 4 are claiming that the devices have a gap between the plastic body of the phone, and the metal frame that surrounds the edge of the phone. According to reports, the gap is large enough to stick in a business card. Samsung has issued a statement about the gap, denying that it is a problem, or will affect functionality of the device in any way.

Foxconn struggling to hire people to help with iPhone 6 production

Foxconn has embarked on an aggressive hiring campaign for its Shenzhen and Zhengzhou factories, hoping to improve production of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, according to Digitimes. The site indicates that because assembly line work isn't as attractive as it used to be in China, Foxconn is having a hard time recruiting enough people to staff its factories. As a solution, it has been staging hiring events to keep up its workforce.

Decade-old Apple versus Real will see trial, possibly in November

The new judge on the Apple versus Real anti-trust case has declared that there is enough evidence to go to trial, after nine years of litigation and a judge's retirement during the process. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers has ordered a trial after an earlier pre-trial conference, finding that Real attorneys have presented enough evidence to show that Apple created a monopoly with its FairPlay DRM, which then allowed the Cupertino manufacturer to overcharge customers.

EU accuses Ireland of giving Apple illegal state aid

As expected, the European Commission has issued a preliminary finding in which it suggests that Apple is receiving illegal state aid from the Irish government. "In the light of the foregoing considerations, the Commission's preliminary view is that the tax ruling of 1990 (effectively agreed in 1991) and of 2007 in favour of the Apple group constitute State aid according to Article 107(1) TFEU [Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union]," the document says. "The Commission has doubts about the compatibility of such State aid with the internal market. The Commission has therefore decided to initiate the procedure laid down in Article 108(2) TFEU with respect to the measures in question."

Apple Pay, iPad with Touch ID references found in iOS 8.1 beta

Inside the just-released iOS 8.1 beta for developers are various clues to future Apple products and services, according to developer Hamza Sood. He uncovered settings menus for Apple Pay as well as references to an iPad that includes Touch ID -- both expected additions in forthcoming versions of iOS and iPad models, respectively. A further find of Apple Pay for the iPad appears to offer only online-buying or in-app purchasing support.

[Update: Apple official announcement reveals China debut of iPhone 6, 6 Plus on October 17] The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have now finally been cleared by the country's regulatory agency for sale in China, and will formally debut on October 17, Apple says. According to Bloomberg, the holdup was apparently over some privacy concerns brought up by Chinese authorities. The company agreed to make some changes, which may or may not be included in the forthcoming iOS 8.1 beta, and received the clearance to use Chinese LTE and 3G networks.

Apple-owned Beats sues man claiming to be brand co-founder

According to new court filings, Apple-owned Beats is suing Roam and Jibe Audio founder Steven Lamar for false advertisements and unfair competition after Lamar posted numerous times on social media and his own company's website that he was a "co-founder" of Beats alongside Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine. While Lamar does have a legitimate connection to the headphone maker, and collects a royalty on certain models of Beats headphones, Beats says in its filing that Lamar has "never had any ownership interest" in the audio products company.
