Ron Johnson recruiting former Apple staff for new delivery firm

Former Apple retail head and later JC Penney CEO Ron Johnson is working on a "high-end, on-demand delivery service" for gadgets, says The Information, citing sources in contact with him. Johnson has allegedly recruited some other former Apple workers, including ex-VP Jerry McDougal. McDougal left Apple at the beginning of 2013; Johnson left JC Penney roughly three months later.

Apple TV gets promised FX Now app channel

Apple has silently updated the Apple TV with an expected FX Now app channel. The app offers on-demand streaming of content from FX, FXX, and FXM, such as American Horror Story and Sons of Anarchy. Viewers must however authenticate a cable subscription from a provider such as AT&T U-Verse, Bright House, Comcast Xfinity, Cox, or Time Warner Cable.

Samsung exiting Europe PC market; sales continue in US, elsewhere

Following continued dismal sales in Europe of computer hardware, electronics giant manufacturer has ceased sales in the region, effective immediately. The sales stop includes the company's popular Ativ line, as well as the generally successful Chromebook products by the Korean manufacturer. While the company claims the stop is temporary, no word has been given on when the company may resume sales again.

Apple may rebrand Beats Music in February, rumors hint

Apple could announce a new, rebranded version of Beats Music in February, according to "industry scuttlebutt" heard by Re/code's John Paczkowski. No other information has leaked, but it's speculated that the switch may happen in parallel with the Grammy Awards, which are being held February 8th. The event could theoretically serve as a marketing springboard for a new service.

Released today are the Maxify MB5320 Wireless Inkjet Small Office All-In-One (AIO) printer, the MB5020 Wireless Inkjet Small Office AIO printer, MB2320 Wireless Inkjet Home Office AIO printer, MB2020 Wireless Inkjet Home Office AIO printer, and iB4020 Wireless Inkjet Small Office printer. All five models are aimed at at the small office or home user, and feature an array of mobile and cloud printing options.

iPhone 6 Plus bending in pockets, some users complain

Square CEO: Apple Pay, Bitcoin payments included in future register

Square's next generation of payment terminal could allow retailers to accept payments from Bitcoin and Apple Pay, the company head has suggested. This week in the MacNN Forums "subego" started a thread that appears to be showcasing some of the bazaar interpretations Apple's new predictive text in iOS 8 creates, either that or he is simply trying to live up to his "Clinically Insane" ranking by spewing incoherent gibberish. Today a Fresh-Faced Recruit who goes by the name "Swervage" has started a rather unusual thread lashing out at Apple for not making Mavericks compatible with Palm Pilots, going as far as saying that this is "monumentally moronic" of Apple.

The refurbished 11.6-inch MacBook Air with a 1.4GHz Intel dual-core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM and 128GB of flash storage has been cut by $130 to $769. Now priced at $929, after a $170 discount, is the 21.5-inch iMac with a 1.4GHz Intel dual-core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and 500GB of hard drive space.

Bipartisan bill seeks to clarify overseas data warrant requirements

In the shadow of Microsoft's dispute with the US Department of Justice, Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Dean Heller (R-NV), and Senate Judiciary Committee member Chris Coons (D-DE), legislation has been proposed to codify law enforcement access to citizen's data stored internationally. The bill, titled the Law Enforcement Access to Data Stored Abroad Act seeks to authorize the use of extraterritorial search warrants, but vacate said warrants if it requires parties involved to break the laws of a country to do so.

Apple Watch will be able to control Apple TV, says Cook

People will be able to use the Apple Watch as a remote for their Apple TV, Apple CEO Tim Cook mentions in a full-length version of a recent Bloomberg interview. "I love operating my Apple TV from the watch. I don't have to worry anymore about the remote falling through the cushions of the sofa," he says. The interviewer notes that the public has yet to see the matching app. "There's -- I don't think we showed this," Cook responds. "I've got a little advance copy. And so it will operate your Apple TV, and you can imagine that it can control other things as well."

EU anti-trust chief officially demands more from Google settlement

European Commission anti-trust head Joaquin Almunia has called for Google to improve its proposal to mitigate concerns that the search engine is abusing its industry-leading position and manipulating search results. The previous deal struck has now apparently collapsed, leaving the Mountain View, CA company to start negotiation a new one, or face fines of up to $6 billion if the complaint moves to formal monopoly charges.

Chinese approval of iPhone 6 should be 'completed soon'

The Chinese government has said it is close to certifying the iPhone 6 for sale in the country, according to CNBC's Eunice Yoon. The reporter adds that the news is already resulting in lower black market prices, given views that official sales through Apple and local carriers could begin soon. At the moment the base model of the iPhone 6 is selling for about $1,900, while the 6 Plus is valued at roughly $3,250. The most popular colors are said to be gold and space gray, which can fetch a premium as high as $500.

Comcast to FCC: Plenty of competition, no reason to block TWC merger

In a filing with the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Comcast has spelled out why it believes it should be allowed to purchase Time Warner Cable. Saying that users have enough high-speed cable options including wireless and satellite, and that switching to one of the "broad range" of competitors it has such as Google Fiber, the giant believes it should be able to complete the merger without citizens or the Government being concerned about a monopolistic situation.

Official Apple stats put iOS 8 adoption at 46 percent of devices

New data from Apple -- based on Sunday traffic at the App Store -- indicates that iOS 8 adoption is actually up to 46 percent of iOS devices, despite lower numbers tracked by third-party firms. Apple's figures put iOS 7 at 49 percent, and iOS 6 or earlier at 5 percent. iOS 8 became available for compatible devices on September 17th, and is pre-installed on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, which launched Friday.

Podfather Fadell mourns discontinuation of iPod Classic

USB Type-C to support DisplayPort Alternate Mode, '4K and beyond'

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) announced today that it has been working with the USB 3.0 Promoter Group to create a new DisplayPort mode that works in conjunction with USB Type-C. The new mode, dubbed DisplayPort Alternate Mode, could be used to drive monitor resolutions to "4K and beyond," as well as delivering up to 100 watts of power and USB 3.1 data over a single Type-C cable.
