Workplace-ranking website Glassdoor.com has unveiled its annual "Best Places to Work" looking ahead to 2014, and Apple remains well inside the top 50, but dropped a spot from its 2013 ranking of 34th among companies with 1,000 or more employees. The point score, however, only dropped one-tenth of a point in the "Satisfaction" category, scoring a 3.8 out of five in the new poll. The rating comes from employee's own anonymous ratings of the company over the past 12 months.

An annual shootout between Google's Google Now and Apple's Siri voice-assisted virtual assitants conducted by Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray has resulted in a virtual tie, with both services receiving the same overall grade. Siri barely edged out Google Now by virtual of its better integration with OS commands -- an advantage that comes with the program's deep OS integration -- but both programs got the same overall grade (C+) and percentage of questions correct (79 percent).
America's fourth-largest carrier, T-Mobile, has announced a holiday season special that allows buyers to sign up for a 16GB iPhone 5s or 5c with no down payment for a limited time. The up-front costs of the iPhones were previously $149 for the 5s and $49 for the 5c. T-Mobile suspended down payments previously over the Black Friday event, but resumed charging the down payments afterwards. The suspension of down payments applies to "well-qualified new and existing customers," the company says.

What are probably the last two Apple Store openings for 2013 will take place this Saturday, December 14 with openings of the expanded and remodelled Stonestown store in San Francisco, and an all-new store in Düsseldorf, Germany. The Stonestown location has more than doubled its original square footage by moving to a location near the original store, which opened in 2004. The Düsseldorf store is said to be located in the upscale Kö-Bogen mall in the Königsallee shopping district.

Twitter on Tuesday released updates for both the iOS and Android versions of its mobile app, bringing a redesign and new features for users. The updates pack a number of enhancements, and they give users the ability to share photos via Direct Message. The updates also add new capabilities with regard to push notifications, letting users keep better track of their closer friends on Twitter.

New York's Mayor Bloomberg today announced the launch of a new outdoor public WiFi network in Harlem accessible to all users at no cost. The Harlem WiFi network will extend 95 city blocks, from 110th to 138th Streets between Frederick Douglass Boulevard and Madison Avenue making it the largest continuous free outdoor public wireless network in the nation.

Sprint announced it will begin delivery of Samsung Galaxy S 4 with the enhanced LTE Sprint Spark to its sales channels in the next few weeks. Sprint Spark allows tri-band devices, like the Galaxy S 4, to support active hand-off mode between 800MHz, 1.9GHz and 2.5GHz and provide data session continuity as the devices move between spectrum bands.

Addressing a friendly crowd of investors in New York City, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson noted that with cellphone adoption at 75 percent and climbing, that networks would soon stop offering large subsidies for devices. The move comes on the heels of AT&T's new pricing plan that offers customers to save $15 per month, if users retain an older device, rather than upgrade a device after two years of use.

All has been rather quiet this week in the MacNN forums, however there are still unresolved issues plaguing many users. Yesterday, one Forum Regular realized that a bunch of e-mails that had been stored on iCloud have gone missing, after using Time Machine they discovered 500GB of lost messages, but they are unable to restore them. Internet giant Yahoo has acquired yet another small company, this time QuikIO, which provided cross-platform video streaming services, as well as an app for Apple's iOS platform. Pando Daily confirmed the acquisition this week, pointing out that the service will be shutting down by December 31 of this year. The acquisition is the latest in a string that has seen Yahoo snapping up smaller companies as it attempts to retool for a push to regain mindshare in the coming months.

A startup offering cable TV streaming over the Internet has opened its service to everyone in New York, following a successful test period in the city. In a similar manner to Aereo's service, NimbleTV will offer cable subscribers access to the same channels but over the Internet, along with the ability to record programs via the cloud-based DVR.

DataMan Pro, a data usage app for iOS, has released an updated version today. Version 8.3 of the app learns its user's usage trends, and can notify users how much they can use each day without surpassing a user-defined data cap. The new version also features an improved Smart Forecast, allowing users receive notifications on their usage based on trended information.
Apple has reportedly poached an advertising executive, Michael Pallad, from Cumulus Media, unnamed sources have told Ad Age. After serving as executive VP of sales at the second-largest owner of FM radio stations, Pallad now is said to be tasked with overseeing international ad sales for Apple's iTunes Radio service.

Mozilla has announced the release of version 26.0 of its popular Firefox browser. The update adds a number of new features, and it is one of the more significant updates to the browser in some time. Chief among these updates is the ability to exert greater control over plug-ins and memory usage, including the ability to have plug-ins only begin playing when a user chooses directly to have them do so.

Apps for Socl, the site opened for testing by Microsoft's Future Social Experiences Labs (FuSE Labs) this time last year, are now available to download on iOS, Android, and Windows Phone.
The US Patent and Trademark Office has granted Apple patent protection for a manufacturing process that focuses on curved touchscreens. Patent No. 8,603,574, spotted by AppleInsider, describes a fabrication method that attempts to minimize a curved touchscreen's substrate and film thickness without distorting or damaging the integrated components.

The Amazon Cloud Drive Photos app for iOS has received an update, bringing support for videos. Appearing on iOS months after Android, TechCrunch reports that the app allows for videos up to 2GB or 20 minutes in length to be uploaded, with the Cloud Photos Auto-Save also updated to allow existing videos on an iPhone or iPad to be automatically uploaded to the service. Other tweaks include a "large upload mode" that disables the iOS lock screen to let uploads finish, and an indicator in the Settings screen showing the usage of Cloud Drive by media.
