Hands On: Nihilumbra 2.0 (iOS)

Briefly: Free football on Apple TV, new acts for Apple Music Festival

CBS has revealed that it will stream this year's Super Bowl contest, along with the AFC playoff games and two regular-season football games on a number of "laptops, desktops, and tablets" and other devices, including Apple TV, free of charge without a need for cable account authentication. The two games will be the New York Jets versus the Miami Dolphins in London on October 4 at 9:30AM ET, and a US Thanksgiving Day game between the Carolina Panthers and the Dallas Cowboys on November 26 at 4:30PM ET.

Motorola debuts second-gen 360, new 360 Sport smartwatch

On Wednesday, Motorola announced a second-gen version of its Moto 360 smartwatch, and also introduced a new fitness-oriented model called the 360 Sport. The two devices are mostly identical in terms of features, but the Sport will use silicon materials to protect it from heat and sweat, include independent GPS that will work without a connection to a smartphone, and offers both traditional LED backlighting and limited front-side illumination for better outdoor reading.

Look away. Look away. You don't need this, you really do not -- but you're going to want it. Here's how smitten we are with the Griffin Powermate Bluetooth: it's on our desk, it's connected to our Mac and we're using it constantly yet we still lust after it as if it were something Apple had just announced. That's a bit of a turnaround given that when we picked it up we expected it to be spectacularly pointless. It's only a knob, a round aluminium control that sits on your desk and does things like turn the volume up or down.

In the news: new Apple Watch bands, $149 Apple TV in latest rumors

A pair of new "confirmed" rumors regarding accessories and devices that might be revealed at the September 9 Apple event are based on either previous leaked images or an "echo chamber" of cross-reported stories on the next Apple TV, though they may or may not come to pass. As widely predicted, the first of the reports says that Apple will debut new bands for the Apple Watch. While not unexpected, the report is based on a leaked image of new Sport colors shown by Sir Jonathan Ive at a show in Italy last April.

FTC finds Machinima responsible for Xbox One ad 'deceptive conduct'

The California-based Machinima Network has agreed to settle US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) charges that it engaged in deceptive advertising by paying "influencers" to post YouTube videos endorsing Microsoft's Xbox One system and several games. Under the proposed settlement, Machinima is prohibited from similar deceptive conduct in the future, and the company is required to ensure its influencers clearly disclose when they have been compensated in exchange for their endorsements.

Briefly: Hulu commercial-free option, Amazon Instant Video offline

Hulu has implemented it's rumored advertising-free subscription option to its streaming service. Priced at $12 per month, the new tier offers the same content as its standard $8 subscription but users will be able to watch shows without interruptions from commercials during the show itself, though TechCrunch notes pre-roll advertising for some shows will continue due to licensing agreements. The service advises that the existing $8 service will continue to show "fewer commercials than scheduled television."

Apple again adds 18 more financial partners to Apple Pay list

On Wednesday, Apple added another 18 US banks and credit unions to the list of institutions now supporting Apple Pay with their issued credit and debit cards. The total number of US partners has now reached 457, up from the last update that also added 18 institutions in mid-August, with all major American banks and CU's now supporting the mobile payment service. The latest announcement comes on the heels of rumors that Apple will announce expansion into another country, such as Canada, at its September 9 media event.

Comcast tests $30 fee to remove Internet service data cap in Florida

Comcast is testing out an extra fee that will help Internet customers avoid paying out excess bandwidth-related charges on their monthly bill, in areas where a cap is enforced. The cable company is allowing customers in areas of Florida to pay $30 extra per month for unlimited data through the fiber network, letting subscribers go above their monthly usage allowance without worrying about receiving a higher than expected bill the following month.

Polaroid Snap resurrects instagram-like photos for 21st century

At Berlin's IFA trade show, Polaroid has shown the Snap -- a digital camera that makes prints without ink cartridges. The camera, similar to the Z2300 unveiled in 2012 uses encapsulated ZINK paper, coupled with the 10MP camera sensor in the camera to deliver 2x3-inch prints shortly after snapping the picture.

Asus shows RT-AC5300 router with eight antennas at IFA

Asus has unveiled what it claims to be a wireless router with the "world's fastest Wi-Fi" connection at Germany's IFA show this morning. The RT-AC5300 takes its cue from the RT-AC3200 in using a large number of antennas, with this router using a total of eight detachable dual-band along all four main edges of the device to help it achieve speeds of up to 5.3Gbps over Wi-Fi, using both 2.4GHz and 5Ghz bands.

Toshiba Q300, Q300 pro SSD line unveiled at IFA trade show

Intel details entire range of sixth-generation Skylake processors

Intel has finally confirmed its entire lineup of Skylake processors, produced using a 14nm process, at its IFA keynote address in Germany this morning. The sixth generation of Intel Core processors detailed today consists of 48 new processors, including 20 destined for use in desktop systems and servers and 26 designed for notebooks and tablets, one of which is an unlocked mobile processor meant for enthusiast notebooks.

Second Apple vs Samsung damages retrial set for March or April

US District Court Judge Lucy Koh, who has presided over both of the previous Apple vs Samsung juried trials (and one prior damages retrial), has set a date in either March or April of next year for the second damages retrial stemming from the first patent trial, brought on by a decision from the Federal Court of Appeals. That first patent trial's original $1.05 billion judgement against Samsung has been steadily whittled down through appeals, and is now approximately half its original amount.

Apple patents smoke detection system for mobile devices

A recently discovered patent filing suggests Apple has considered adding the ability for an iPhone or an iPad to warn users of a potential fire. Patent number 9,123,221 describing "Wireless device networks with smoke detection capabilities" could lead to a future iPhone helping protect lives and property by discovering nearby smoke, and using its network connectivity to pass alerts to other nearby electronic devices to save others.

Apple continues hiring from Tesla, automotive industries

Apple has recently hired some further new engineers from Testla Motors and others with automotive backgrounds, fueling rumors of further work in vehicle electronics (with less credible reports claiming Apple is working on its own car). Among the recent hires, who may or many not be working on the same projects, are a technologist involved with automotive algorithms, two engineers from Tesla, and a former operations manager at India's Tata Motors.
