And I’m back! After a little vacation, I’m refreshed and ready to bring you some more great iPhone tips, tricks, hacks and analysis. Now, I used to give you some iPhone news to feast on, but we’ve decided that that sort of thing is best suited for the more-than capable MacNN news team. Instead, the iPhone blog here on MacNN will be reserved for some great iPhone hacks, coupled with my opining about everything-iPhone. So, if that sounds good, keep reading…

Has anyone else ever used this AppTapp Installer.app? If you have, chances are, you probably didn’t go through the trials and tribulations that I did just to get it installed. So here goes: I clicked on version 3.1 and downloaded it to my Mac (it’s not capable of running on Windows). Next, I started downloading it onto my iPhone. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize that iTunes should have been closed and my iPhone — complete with my iTunes library, emails and contacts went down like a ton of bricks. After about twenty minutes of restoring it back to August 14th, I got the guts to try it again and, without fail, it died on me again. An hour later, it was back up and running.

So now the real question is: should I try it for a third time? Sure! This time, I decided to read a bit more and was told that iTunes should be closed when it’s being downloaded. So, with a bit more chutzpah and patience, I tried installing it just one more time. Much to my surprise — it worked!

Now that it’s in — I love it. I especially like it because my last row finally has an icon on it! The time has come: let’s find and play with some apps.

    Go for it!

I have to admit that although the installer leaves something left to be desired
(I quit iTunes but didn’t read that my iPhone should have already been connected… BUT I have to admit that they say it clearly on their installer and I just bulldozed right through their install… so, I think we are all just a bit quick on the draw to _not_ read stuff and just plow ahead these days..)
I plugged the iPhone in a few moments later than I think I was supposed to and… I’m pretty certain it didn’t work the first time but I disconnected and didn’t think it was working so I reconnected.. and voila… the second time (total time: about 2 minutes)… everything was working!

So, patience out the window, I would suggest going slower through their installer.

I have to say that their software is brilliant on the iPhone, installing/updating/uninstalling works better than on any device I have ever seen (and believe me, I feel like I’m in the 24th century compared to my days using a Treo only a year ago…)

Installing a terminal shell: less than 2 minutes. And it works! Need to reboot after install: nope.

The installer is bulletproof and is an ingenius piece of work… and the interface is very elegant.

    And free! Two thumbs up!
Incredible signs of things to come in the unix-based-phone-market of the present day.
