In a recent study conducted by usability consultant User Centric, it was determined that all of you QWERTY users take almost twice as long to type the same message on the iPhone as those who have never used a QWERTY keyboard before.

“For QWERTY users, texting was fast and accurate,” said User Centric’s Jen Allen. “But when they switched to the iPhone, they were frustrated with the touch-sensitive keyboard.”

Of course, before we jump up and down and say I told you so, the study only worked with twenty participants — ten of whom owned a phone with a QWERTY keyboard. The other ten had only owned a phone with a numeric keypad.

One issue many have taken with the study is the poor amount of control and time given to the research. As Steve Jobs mentioned in his address to the public before the iPhone’s release, it could take up to three or four days before users would be comfortable with the new design. The study examined people in one day.

So, if you think you have what it takes and you own a QWERTY keyboard and can take it to a newbie, let’s hear about it and compare results.
