Numbers include just two weeks of Thunderbolt
Verizon has announced that its 4G LTE subscriber base has expanded by 500,000 customers in the first quarter of the year. The number is primarily driven by customers buying the carrier's first LTE-equipped smartphone, the HTC Thunderbolt, which is said to have surpassed 260,000 activations in its two weeks of availability before the end of the first quarter.
The number of LTE customers still pales in comparison to Sprint's WiMAX base, which includes more than 3.3 million phones or modems. It is too early to determine wether Sprint will maintain its lead, after arriving early on the 4G market ahead of Verizon.
The carrier's LTE options are continuing to expand, with the Droid Charge and Bionic expected to arrive this spring. [viaSidecut Reports]
