Service not reliant on Verizon's network, uses any iOS or Android phone
Verizon has announced the availability of Hum, an aftermarket vehicle technology and subscription service combining a reader that is plugged into the vehicle's OBD port, a Bluetooth-enabled device that is clipped to the visor, and a smartphone. The monthly subscription service includes a smartphone app allowing subscribers to monitor their vehicle health, contact help, and manage maintenance needs, even when they are not behind the wheel.
More features of the device include roadside assistance summoning, incident alert and emergency assistance similar to OnStar, access to a mechanic's hotline, OBD port information and interpretation for diagnostics, travel and repair discounts, stolen vehicle location assistance through GPS, and parking location coupled with a smartphone.
The carrier agnostic Hum service starts at $15 per month for iOS or Android which includes the hardware that Verizon values at $120. Following purchase, there is the option to add other vehicles for less per month than the single subscription.
