Cirrus creates Lightning-headphone dev kit
Apple supplier Cirrus Logic has introduced a MFi-compliant new development kit for companies interested in using Cirrus' chips to create Lightning-based headphones, which -- regardless of whether rumors about Apple dropping the analog headphone jack in its iPhone this fall -- can offer advantages to music-loving iOS device users. The kit mentions some of the advantages of an all-digital headset or headphone connector, including higher-bitrate support, a more customizable experience, and support for power and data transfer into headphone hardware. Several companies already make Lightning headphones, and Apple has supported the concept since June 2014. http://bit.ly/29giiZj

Apple employees testing wheelchair features
New features included in the forthcoming watchOS 3 are being tested by Apple retail store employees, including a new activity-tracking feature that has been designed with wheelchair users in mind. The move is slightly unusual in that, while retail employees have previously been used to test pre-release versions of OS X and iOS, this marks the first time they've been included in the otherwise developer-only watchOS betas. The company is said to have gone to great lengths to modify the activity tracker for wheelchair users, including changing the "time to stand" notification to "time to roll" and including two wheelchair-centric workout apps. http://bit.ly/2955JDa

Twitter stickers slowly roll out to users
Twitter has introduced "stickers," allowing users to add extra graphical elements to their photos before uploading them to the micro-blogging service. A library of hundreds of accessories, props, and emoji will be available to use as stickers, which can be resized, rotated, and placed anywhere on the photograph. Images with stickers will also become searchable with viewers able to select a sticker to see how others use the same graphic in their own posts. Twitter advises stickers will be rolling out to users over the next few weeks, and will work on both the mobile apps and through the browser. http://bit.ly/29bbwUE

Great article! I've been wondering why my Yosemite server can be seen via uPnP, while my old 10.7.5 server works just fine. Thought it was a router bug. Thanks for taking the time to explain all the mumbojumbo.
THIS is why I continue to read and support MacNN!

Yosemite *can't* be seen...

I realize that what I'm going to say doesn't apply to everyone. However, I had been having serious discoveryd and networkd related problems since the first release of Yosemite. The problem were related to a home media server (Mac Mini) and three different Apple TVs. I had just about given up hope when everything got fixed for me in 10.10.3. It was the last thing I expected.

noibs: glad to hear your issue finally got resolved. My home setup is uncomplex, so I'm not seeing much of this issue, but there are some related networking failures to do with Instant Hotspot between my Mac and my iPhone (but not at all between iPhone and Wi-Fi iPad) that I'm still investigating. Whether I can lay the blame on discoveryd's door or not, I can't tell yet.

Wow, this is very interesting. I've been managing a school-network which recently added 90+ iPads (now on iOS 8.3). The school has a total of 8 wifi access points, and the network should be able to *easily* handle the additional iPad load. (Each access point, for example, can handle 30+ MacBooks of various vintages - but all running ML in the particular building, without even the slightest hiccup). However, the iPads continually lose connectivity, and I've been through every possible setting I can think of. It's a real problem in the middle of online-testing; because once the connection is lost the test often has to be restarted (we simply moved all testing back to the laptops and iMacs...). Good to know where the blame lies. (Unfortunately, like many recent Apple updates; this simply makes me wish we never installed the updates in the first place. These the the kinds of problems we used to see, and fully expect to see, in Microsoft updates. Seeing these types of repeated major blunders (how many times can Apple release updates that cause major networking issues? Apparently as infinitely as their address suggests...) in Apple's updates is incredibly disheartening...)

I had this problem consistently in one MacBook Pro yet never having it happen my other (nearly identical) MacBook Pro in the same Time Capsule WiFi network at home, that sits five feet away. I did not want to try replacing discoveryD with mDNSresponder because the inconsistent results means to me that the instructions for doing so are incomplete or we are missing some other piece of information, either way its not reliable.
The affected machine experienced the problem several times a day, every day, would randomly not load webpages or retrieve email, and the cooling fans would become very noisy, presumably running at full speed.
Checking Activity Monitor showed every time that discoveryD was using 90 to 100% CPU.
The fix for me was to run a simple AppleScript from Dr Bob Tech Blog:
http://drbobtechblog.com/discoveryd-fix-for-fan-noise-and-excessive-cpu-usage/
I would run this AppleScript which simply halts and restarts discoveryD, it only takes a few seconds to execute and quit itself and then the machine returns to normal operation (and the fans get quiet after third seconds or so).
Strangely, after a few days of using this script, the machine no longer has the problem at all. I wonder if this is clearing out a corrupted buffer (or similar effect) which takes a bit of time to correct itself. Either way, this works quickly.

Silicon John (and the other commenters here): posts like these are exactly the reason we spend the time digging into the technical deep weeds to try and identify issues like this. Thanks so much for these great and helpful comments.
