Ascend Mate 7 catches up with other flagships, adds fingerprint scanner

Huawei has updated the Ascend Mate smartphone line, with the release of the Ascend Mate 7. The phablet, announced at IFA today, has a six-inch 1080p display packed into its 185g (6.5 ounces), 7.9mm-thick (0.31 inches) aluminum body, giving the smartphone a pixel density of 367ppi and extremely thin bezels on either side of the screen.

Using an octa-core Kirin 925 System on Chip, the Ascend Mate will be made available in two versions: 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, or 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. On the back is a 13-megapixel BSI f2.0 camera with a five-megapixel front-facing version, with the phone also including a 4,100mAh battery and Category 6 LTE support.

Running on Android 4.4 with the company's Emotion UI, Huawei has managed to fit in some extras found in other flagship devices. An Ultra Power Saving mode kicks in at 10 percent power, and its rear-mounted fingerprint scanner is able to store up to five sets of fingerprints, with each able to be assigned various levels of access to the device's functions.

A total of 30 countries will receive the Huawei Ascend Mate 7 when it launches in the third quarter, with the two versions expected to sell for 499 euro ($650 US) and 599 euro ($780), depending on the storage and RAM.
