WD launches My Passport Wireless portable storage with built-in Wi-Fi

updated 09:03 am EDT, Wed September 3, 2014

WD My Passport Wireless supports Wi-Fi connections with up to eight devices

Storage drive producer Western Digital has added another storage device to its My Passport external storage range, one with wireless connectivity. My Passport Wireless has its own built-in Wi-Fi connection, allowing for mobile devices to connect for backing up or data retrieval, all without requiring a physical connection to the device.

Acting as a Wi-Fi hotspot, My Passport Wireless creates its own Wi-Fi network, allowing up to eight devices to connect, though it still offers data transfer over USB 3.0. Capable of streaming up to four HD videos simultaneously and managed using the WD My Cloud mobile app for iOS and Android, the drive also includes an SD card slot for quickly transferring photographs from memory cards, while its battery is said to provide up to six hours of streaming and up to 20 hours on standby.

WD will be shipping the My Passport Wireless from late September, with the 500GB model priced at $130, 1TB for $180, and 2TB for $220.
