Toshiba Chromebook 2 adds 1080p display, 4GB RAM options

updated 08:07 am EDT, Wed September 3, 2014

Two models of Toshiba Chromebook 2 shipping in US from October

Toshiba's second iteration of the Chromebook adds quite a few improvements compared to the original, including a choice of 13.3-inch displays. The Chromebook 2 will be available with a similar 1366x768 monitor to the first version, though a second option involves a 1920x1080 IPS display as well as doubling the amount of memory.

Both versions will have an Intel Celeron processor with Intel integrated graphics, and though each will have 16GB of SSD storage supplemented by 100GB of Google Drive storage, the 1080p model will have 4GB of RAM to the lower-resolution notebook's 2GB. Each will have HDMI, USB 2.0, and USB 3.0 ports, a memory card reader, Wi-fi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, and a HD webcam with dual microphones, with the stereo speakers now tuned by Skullcandy. The 1366x768 model does win out over the 1080p device in terms of battery life, with each lasting up to 11.5 hours and 9 hours respectively.

Measuring 19.3mm (0.76 inches) thick and weighing 1.35kg (2.97 pounds), thinner and lighter than the first Chromebook, the Chromebook 2 will be going on sale in the US from October 5th, priced at $250 and $330 depending on resolution.
