New watch features 'premium' materials, Android Wear, wireless charging

Asus Corporate Vice President Eric Chen today went on stage at a pre-IFA 2014 event to announce the company's latest lineup of innovations, including Asus ZenWatch, the company's first wearable device produced in partnership with Google. Asus ZenWatch is the first wearable device from the company, is powered by Android Wear, and features a version of the Asus ZenUI user interface developed specifically for the product.

The new wearable pairs with a smartphone running Android 4.3 or higher, and can control the phone remotely with unlocking from the watch face, remote camera activation, and find my phone features over Bluetooth 4.0 and the company's companion phone application. A nine-axis sensor in the watch enables it to be a "wellness manager," according to the company. The companion Asus ZenUI Wellness app lets users monitor and track a range of wellness statistics including steps taken, calories burned, activity duration, heart rate, exercise intensity and relaxation level.

The watch is driven by the 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 SoC, and has 512MB of RAM, and 4GB of storage. Connectivity is provided by Bluetooth 4.0. The 1.4Wh battery is charged wirelessly, in a water-resistant casing.

Pricing is expected to be €199, which is about $260 US, but a $199 US retail price is more likely. The ZenWatch will ship in the late third quarter of the year, or early in the fourth.
