Microsoft CEO journeying to China, antitrust investigation underway

Microsoft, SAIC refuse comment on reports of executive's travel

Sources close to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella claim that the executive is slated to visit China in late September. While the visit is scheduled, and has been for at least two weeks, unclear is whether Nadella will visit the Chinese government, or attempt to clear up any issues related to the China State Administration for Industry and Commerce's (SAIC) antitrust examination of the software giant.

Reuters reports that neither Microsoft nor SAIC have commented on the executive's trip. Microsoft does not historically discuss Nadella's travel plans.

SAIC's investigation regards Microsoft's Windows operating system, Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Office. The complaint alleges Microsoft does not tailor to the Chinese market, and takes issue with bundling practices and document authentication. The probe has been met with some skepticism outside China, where it is seen as retaliatory for US espionage and the Microsoft buy of Nokia. Microsoft claims to be "serious about complying with China's laws and committed to addressing SAIC's questions and concerns."

The visit wouldn't be the first high-ranking Microsoft official to visit the country since the raids on Microsoft offices in June. Microsoft Deputy General Counsel Mary Snapp has journeyed to the country, and has met with SAIC officials to attempt to resolve problems between the Chinese government and the company.
