Samsung unveils Gear S with SIM card, curved display, Gear Circle

updated 06:47 am EDT, Thu August 28, 2014

Gear S smartwatch can operate independently from smartphone with own 3G connection

Samsung has unveiled a new Gear smartwatch and earphones before its Unpacked event at IFA. The Gear S updates the original device's bulky design into a slimline and stylish smartwatch with a curved two-inch 360x480 Super AMOLED display, though unlike the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo, this edition adds the SIM card and 3G connection from the rumored Gear Solo, allowing it to work independently from a smartphone.

Inside the Gear S is a dual-core 1GHz processor with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage, running on Tizen. While it can synchronize data with a smartphone over WI-Fi or Bluetooth, the wearable device can also switch to a 3G cellular connection if separated, so wearers can continue to respond to messages and use the S Voice assistant wherever it can receive phone signal.

The IP67 water and dust-resistant watch also includes GPS, a 300mAh battery said to last for up to two days, and a heart rate monitor usable with various fitness apps, including S Health and Nike+ Running.

Accompanying the Gear S at launch is the Gear Circle, wireless earphones which operate over Bluetooth and feature a magnetic lock with clasps, turning it into a form of necklace when not in use. Gear Circle is able to vibrate to alert for incoming messages, and has a 180mAh battery said to last for up to 9 hours of play time.

Both the Gear S and the Gear Circle will be shipping globally from October, though Samsung has yet to provide pricing for either device.
