Kobo gives Aura H2O a 1430x1080 6.8-inch touchscreen display, water protection

Kobo has unveiled an update to its Aura e-book reader, one which allows the e-reader to fend off the occasional splash of water. The Aura H2O is claimed to be the first of its kind to be IP67 certified for water and dust-proofing, meaning it can survive being submerged at a depth of 1 meter (3 feet) for up to 30 minutes.

Just as with the standard Aura, the Aura H20 uses a 1GHz processor with 4GB of onboard storage, supplemented by a microSD card slot. The screen is a Carta E-Ink touchscreen display measuring 6.8 inches, with its 1430x1080 resolution giving it a pixel density of 265 dpi. Battery life is said to last for up to two months when used for 30 minutes per day with the comfort light turned on and Wi-Fi turned off.

While it uses the Kobo bookstore with over four million titles to purchase, it also includes support for EPUB, EPUB3, PDF, and MOBI e-books, comic books in CBZ and CBR formats, and a multitude of other text and image formats. Its TypeGenius system includes ten fonts and 24 sizes as well as weight and sharpness settings, with the device also having Chess and Sudoku games pre-installed.

The Kobo Aura H2O will be shipping in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, and Spain from October 1st, with pre-orders starting from September 1st for $180.
