Apple iWatch announcement due in September, not October, report says

updated 02:01 pm EDT, Wed August 27, 2014

Device said to exploit HealthKit, HomeKit

Apple is planning to announce the long-speculated iWatch health and fitness wearable at its September 9 iPhone event, rather than in October as was originally anticipated, says Re/code's John Paczkowski. It's not clear whether Apple accelerated its schedule, or if October was just a speculative rumor. In any case, the iWatch is expected to exploit not just HealthKit -- Apple's health and fitness tracking platform -- but HomeKit, designed to unify home automation technology.

The latter could allow people to control lights, appliances, or even security systems from their wrist. Paczkowski notes, however, that he hasn't heard any specific plans. It may make sense to announce the iWatch alongside new iPhones. Like most smartwatches, the iWatch will probably be dependent on a nearby phone for its Internet connection and various features, such as notifications, navigation, and/or music playback.
