Samsung rumored to add round-faced smartwatch to Gear range

updated 06:26 am EDT, Tue August 26, 2014

Report claims round Samsung Gear smartwatch in development

Samsung may be preparing to join the ranks of LG and Motorola, by developing a round-faced smartwatch. A report claims the company is working on the device, though despite the expected appearance of the Moto 360 and a new round LG G Watch at IFA, it is unclear when or even if Samsung will be bringing the device to market.

While the rumor from SamMobile is to be expected, considering the interest in round smartwatches as opposed to square versions like the LG G Watch. It is also unknown what operating system the watch will use, namely if Samsung will continue with its Tizen efforts or will switch to Android Wear, the software some other smartwatch producers are using.

The same source apparently revealed that Samsung will be using its IFA event to show off two other devices, alongside the expected Galaxy Note 4. The Gear VR headset, a hard plastic device that mixes the design of the Oculus Rift and Google Cardboard, will allegedly get its unveiling at the event. A standalone smartwatch called the Gear 2 Solo could also make an appearance, with the device relying on its own SIM card for a data connection rather than a nearby smartphone.
