First Amazon smartphone sales speculated as underwhelming

Amazon may not have made as much of an impact with its first smartphone than initially thought, according to a report. Using data from Chitika's advertising network and ComScore figures, it is suggested that the online retailer may have sold fewer than 35,000 units of the Fire Phone, an underwhelming figure when compared to the hype.

As part of the report's calculation, The Guardian took into account Chitika's data for the 20 days after the Fire Phone went on sale. One released graph shows the Fire Phone accounted for 0.02 percent of ad network activity, though it is believed to be closer to 0.015 percent. ComScore claims there were 173 million smartphones used in the United States in a three-month period ending in June, with the figure rising by between 1 million and 2 million per month making estimates for mid-August to be between 175 million and 177 million.

By dividing the estimated total number of used phones by the activity figure, The Guardian initially reckons around 26,400 Fire Phones were actively being used. When taking under-indexing into account, namely phones not actively communicating with the advertising network, the estimate increases to around 33,000, with the report's author Charles Arthur hypothesizing that the device is unlikely to have sold more than 35,000 in the period.

While the 35,000 figure is an estimate, as Amazon has yet to reveal any sales figures for the device, the Fire Phone's launch has been met with mixed reviews. Many large tech sites have issued review scores around 7 out of 10, while Amazon's own sales page rates the smartphone at 3.2 stars out of 5 after 799 customer reviews.
