TiVo unveils Roamio OTA as antenna-only digital video recorder

updated 12:29 pm EDT, Mon August 25, 2014

Roamio OTA DVR includes four tuners, 500GB storage

TiVo has launched a version of its Roamio line of digital video recorders made just for over-the-air broadcasts, something which may be of use to "cord cutters." The Roamio OTA offers a similar experience to the cable-based models of the set-top box, except it employs four tuners for recording via an antenna, and does not require a cable card to function.

With a 500GB storage capable of holding up to 75 hours of HD video, the Roamio OTA includes TiVo's recommendations, universal search, and support for services including Netflix, Spotify, and Hulu Plus. It can be remotely controlled with the TiVo app for mobile devices, connects to other TiVo DVRs and TiVo Minis on the same network for multi-room streaming, and when used with the TiVo Stream, can be used to play back video to a smartphone or tablet remotely.

The TiVo Roamio OTA is priced at $50 and will go on sale from September 14th, though an ongoing fee of $15 per month and a one-year commitment is required for TiVo's personalization service. The company is also billing it as a "Limited Edition," though has not revealed how limited its availability is.
