Huawei CEO claims Tizen smartphones have 'no chance to be successful'

Huawei has no choice but to use Android with smartphones, states CEO Yu

Tizen has "no chance to be successful" in the face of Android and iOS, the CEO of Huawei's Consumer Business Group has claimed. Richard Yu advised in an interview that the company has no plans to work with Tizen in the future, despite Huawei having already spent money on research and development for the operating system, one that Samsung is still hoping to have success with.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Yu claims he shut down the Huawei research team working on Tizen, though it is not the only failure in his eyes. Yu complained about the last two years of supporting Windows Phone, losing money on its W-series devices, "It has been difficult to persuade customers to buy a Windows phone," he advised, before revealing that all Windows Phone device development at the manufacturer has been halted.

The lack of faith in Windows Phone and Tizen effectively places Huawei at the mercy of Google. Asked about the company's use of Android, Yu claimed it has "no choice" but to use Android, and though he has his concerns, Huawei is said to have a "good collaboration" with Google. As for following Samsung's lead and making its own operating system, easing away from the reliance on Google, Yu claims it isn't going to happen. "It's easy to design a new OS, but the problem is building the ecosystem around it."

The statements of Huawei's CEO is the latest strike against the fledgling operating system. Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo postponed its launch of a Tizen device in the country, with a spokesperson claiming in January "The market isn't big enough to support three operating systems." Samsung, the driving force behind Tizen, has also delayed a Tizen smartphone launch, citing a need to provide "our users a fullest portfolio of applications."
