Reports of Verizon's return to app sales refuted by carrier [u]

New store has to deal with complexities of multiple carriers, hardware vendors

[/strong]Updated with Verizon statement[/strong] Verizon is allegedly in discussions with other carriers and Android device manufacturers to launch its own app store. According to sources familiar with the matter, the carrier is building up the store, similar to the shuttered V Cast, as a response to reductions in revenue-sharing arrangements with Google through the Google Play store. Verizon has since denied the claims, without providing much information about the report.

The insider sources' data was first disclosed by The Information, with the report suggesting that Verizon would develop an app recommendation engine, using user metrics to suggest other purchases. Verizon reportedly wants to enable developers to code for features of carrier networks that may not be universally available. The store wouldn't be US-only, but a global effort.

Few concrete details exist, as the discussions are said to be in the early phases. The Amazon App Store is the only major competitor to the Google Play storefront, and as mentioned, a previous effort by Verizon for BlackBerry and Android by Verizon never gained traction, and was closed in 2013. Also unknown is how Verizon would deal with Android fragmentation, and variances between carrier versions of core Android.

[em]Update:[/em] Verizon has denied the claims that they are working on an app store. Verizon spokeswoman Debra Lewis told Re/Code of the circulating report that "we have no plans to do that. Been there. Done that."
