Co-branded Samsung tablet adds Nook software features

Samsung and Barnes & Noble has released its first co-branded tablet, as the retailer migrates away from hardware production and into partnering with other manufacturers. The Galaxy Tab 4 Nook is a rebranded version of Samsung's existing Tab 4 tablet, though while the hardware is the same as the original device, the software has been customized with some Nook-specific changes, including access to the Nook store.

A range of over 3 million books is available on the device, along with the Nook Newsstand offering subscriptions and single-copy sales of magazines and newspapers. Nook apps including games are offered, as well as access to the Nook Video service for rental and purchase of TV shows and movies. A recommendations feature is also included, as well as more than $200 of reading and entertainment content.

In terms of hardware, the Galaxy Tab 4 Nook retains its seven-inch 1280x800 LCD display, complete with a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage expandable by microSD. Wi-Fi, GPS, rear 3-megapixel and front-facing 1.3-megapixel cameras, and stereo speakers are also included on the tablet. Running on Android 4.4, it includes a Multi Window mode for multitasking, and can still access Google Play, providing users with more apps and content.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook is on sale at more than 660 Barnes & Noble stores across the United States and online, priced at $179 after a $20 instant rebate.
