HP Stream 14 leaks as $200 Windows 8.1 Chromebook-equivalent

updated 07:15 am EDT, Tue August 19, 2014

First value notebook running Windows 8.1 may have Chromebook specifications

Microsoft's fight against Chromebooks will start with a low-cost offering from HP, according to a report. A leaked data list claims the HP Stream 14 will allegedly have a similar specification list to other Chromebooks, along with a competitive price tag of $200, though the notebook will be running Windows 8.1 instead of Google's Chrome OS.

Mobile Geeks alleges the tablet will use a fanless AMD A4 Micro-6400T quad-core SoC that can can at up to 1.6GHz, combined with Radeon R3 graphics. Offering 2GB of RAM, the notebook will have either 32GB or 64GB of SSD storage, a 720p webcam, Beats Audio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, an SD card reader, HDMI output, one USB 3.0 port, two USB 2.0 ports, and a 14-inch 1366x768 display. Just as Google offers extra Google Drive storage to Chromebook owners, Microsoft provides 100GB of OneDrive online storage for two years.

There may also be another variation of the notebook on the way, with mentions of a full HD display with a touchscreen, with the report also suggesting it could come with a faster 2.2GHz processor.

There is no word on when or if the HP Stream 14 will go on sale, but considering the success of Chromebooks in the notebook market, it would more likely be launched sooner rather than later, possibly in time for holiday shopping.
