Tiltable touch display, 179-point phase detection points in new Sony Alpha camera

Sony has unveiled another mirrorless camera in its Alpha range, one which it calls the world's smallest interchangeable lens camera. The α5100, effectively replacing the NEX-5T and arriving seven months after the α5000 received an update, has the same 24.3-megapixel Exmor APS-C CMOS sensor paired with a BIONZ X image processor as used by the α6000, though it exchanges the electronic viewfinder for other additions.

Along with 25 contrast detection AF points, a similar Fast Hybrid AF is also employed, using 179 phase detection points, which can also be used while filing Full HD video. Offering a shutter speed of 1/4000 of a second, the a5100 has an ISO range of 100 to 25,600, a burst rate of 6fps, and a 1,200-zone evaluative metering system.

On the back is a 3-inch 921k-dot tilting display providing touchscreen controls, with a HDMI micro connector providing video output, while NFC and Wi-Fi connectivity allows for the use of a smartphone to view photographs and remotely control the camera's settings.

Sony is shipping the α5100 in September, priced at $550 for the body alone, or $700 bundled with a 16-50mm zoom lens.
