Sprint allegedly testing new price plans to combat T-Mobile

updated 09:49 am EDT, Sat August 16, 2014

Plans being tested involve changes to Sprint Framily, $50 unlimited plan

Sprint is allegedly testing a suite of price plans for potential launch in the near future, not long after Marcelo Claure took to the Chief Executive Officer position. The new plans being trialled are apparently aggressive, partly to fend off T-Mobile and to recoup its haemorrhaging customer base, with one plan said to offer unlimited voice, text, and data for $50 per month.

The "unlimited everything" plan has been tested in Chicago, reports the Wall Street Journal, with the plan's equivalent on T-Mobile priced at $80, and currently through Sprint for $110 per month, with AT&T and Verizon costing far more.

A second plan is a reworking of Framily, and has been tested in Portland, Oregon. The plan theoretically offers four smartphone lines and 20GB of shared data for $160 per month, providing double the data of equivalents on AT&T and Verizon for the same cost. The third plan again takes its cue from Framily, cutting the cost per line by around $10, bringing the total cost for 5 lines and 1GB of data each to $125, or $25 per line.

It is unclear which plan will be implemented, if any, though it is likely Claure will want to do so soon, if only to set his mark on the troubled carrier.
