Fitness tracker from Toshiba uses small module with interchangeable wristband

Toshiba is joining the ranks of companies producing wearable devices, by creating its own fitness band. The WERAM1100 uses a simplistic design of a small sensor block embedded inside an interchangeable rubber wristband, similar to the Sony SmartBand's construction, with the device able to perform typical fitness tracker monitoring functions.

Linking to an Android smartphone app, with an iOS version due at the end of September, the band can keep track of distances traveled and calories burned using its accelerometer, as well as sleep patterns. Synchronizing over Bluetooth 3.0 and 4.0, the band can also vibrate when certain targets are reached or for an alarm, with the device said to be able to last for up to two weeks on a single battery charge.

Weighing a svelte 27 grams (just under one ounce) with the band, and including IPX5 and IPX7-equivalent water and dust-proofing, Toshiba is putting the WERAM1100 on sale in Japan from August 20th, via Amazon and Yahoo! Shopping for 13,500 yen ($130). It is unclear if it will be made available in other countries in the future, but given the trend by other companies, it's fairly likely for Toshiba to do so.
